Ostomy Leakage

Hi, I have a new temporary ileostomy for J-pouch surgery.  I keep having leaks every day.  My skin is raw and irritated.  I have no stomahesive powder which might help a lot, i am waiting for the supplies in the mail.  I think the problem is that my stomach isnt nice and firm, its soggy and dents in at the stoma, thanks to having twin boys 1 year and 1/2 ago.  Does anyone one have any suggestions on how to make the bag stay on.  Its a one piece.  I would appreciate any suggestions, i'm so frustrated right now.

Yes, it sounds like you need some convexity. If not Eakin seals than you could try bags with built in convexity.

I was having a similar problem and I changed pouch brands.  I have a stomach roll that caused the wafer to crimp everytime I sat down.  It was painful and required me to change the pouch every 2 days.  I was using a Convetec 1 piece.  I switched to a Hollister one piece (88400 to be specific).  The wafer is smaller, thinner, and more flexible.  It's given me a much better seal.  I haven't had any problems since.  If you call Hollister, they can send you out some samples so giving it a try won't cost you anything.  I would tell them you situation and maybe they can get a rush order to you.

they have some pastes that work well, I used it and it fills in the low area of you stomach I used it along with the powder kinda double insurance.

You may already have your supplies by the time you read my reply, but if not, may I suggest, the next time you do a change try this...press firmly on the barrier around the stoma. Hold it for about 30 seconds, then go out just a little and keep pressing down. I do this for a couple of minutes all around the adhesive. When I first got my temporary loop ileostomy (back in July 2007 - still have it), I was not doing this. I was just pressing on the adhesive area outside the stoma area and was not getting a good seal. Like everyone says, the Eakin Seals will help out tremendously. You may find the paste is irritating if you don't find some without alcohol.

So far I have not had a leak.  Its tough to really know my wear time because the stoma nurse told me to change the bag every two days until the skin that was red and raw is completely healed. 

Still changing my bag every two days, no leaks however I had more skin irritation the other day, it was almost healed, I was so excited.  Two steps forward, one step back!  So working on cutting the hole to the right size and having a good seal to protect the skin.  Glad to hear you are doing better too.  Now I'm a little nervous, I'm going back to work next week!  Keeping my fingers crossed that I remain leak free.
