I have a  decision to make.  My surgeon says he can give me a new stoma to replace this failing one, or he can hook my ileum up to my rectum.  What do you all think?  Pros and cons.  Have to call him Friday.

sorry I don't have experience with that but someone should be along...have you been able to find any older posts? They might offer some good info:) Good luck with your decision.

I'll tell you what my surgeon tells me all the time..I see her every 2 weeks to get an anal dialtion so my butthole will stay stretched out so that when she hooks my ileum back up and i start pooping out of my bum again, it won't be too small. And every 2 weeks I ask her and Ive even tried BRIBING her LOL with cookies and pies and cakes for her to hook me back up. But it doesn't work..she likes me a lot more HAHA and looks forward to seeing me lol but she said not until my insides are ready and healed up and my butt stays open wide enough..because the problem Im having right now is that my butthole keeps shrinking back up for some reason and if she hooks me up now, the poop won't have room to come out bc my hole will be too small. So I'd ask your doc and make sure!! that 1-your insides are healed up enough and 2-your bumhole is open enough..i guess not all docs do the anal dialtion thing so im not sure if yours does..but make sure those two things and heck yeah if he says yes and yes you bet Id get hooked back up..But the bad part is, if you aren't ready to be hooked back up and you do get reconnected, and then complications happen, you might have your ileostomy for the rest of your life! So MAKE SURE those two things and ask him what he thinks is best. =) I hope this makes sense and that everything goes ok

Jan - what is the list of Pros and Cons in your mind? And what questions do you have for us that might help you make your decision (if you haven't already)?

I didn't have an option since I have CD, but what are Your feelings?

Been really hurting alot behind ileostomy when something trys to come threw. Just alittle bit comes threw at a time.
1. Staples versus sutures
2.Will I have to ware depends
3.Recover time
4.How long does it take to heal
5.diarrhea or more solid stool
6 How long will I be in the hospital
7.Poesiblity of compilications
8.Adation after sergery
9.Do they do ileostomy why you heal

I haven't made a dicsion yet. Going to see GI doctor next week that I used to go to and see what he thinks. I don't mine an ileostomy. Just have had trouble with it working this past six months and have hurt alot when stuff trys to come threw.
Would really like to here from what anyone knows about this.

Peggy, I'm scard of what might happened if I have this done and it does"t work out the way it is suppose to. My luck hasn"t been that good this past year.

I think you should take all of the info you listed above with you to your doctor's appt, and have a really long chat with your GI doc. Get all of the answers from the dr, then sit down, and make a list of your pros and cons. Gathering information, like you are doing, is your best tool in deciding. Everyone's "plumbing" is so different, as you know. You have a LOT of very good concerns and it is important that each one is addressed with respect to you individually. There is always the possibility of rare complications, etc, with ANY procedure and you will need to weigh all of your options. I know I haven't really given you answers, but I really think you are asking all of the right questions. I wish you the best,

I wore depends for about six months atfter my surgery.. Had to start wearing them when I had UC because of the constant diarrhea...

The sutures came out about 2 weeks or so .. nurse took them out. not big deal...

Was "supposed" to be in the hosptial about a week or so.. had some compliations that took longer....

The consistency of what comes out is based on what you eat. However it won't be anything like what you had before UC.. and you'll never have to worry about needing a plunger in the bathroom again.... Before UC, I used to block toilets routinely. That now, is a fond memory..... :)

There are always the possiblity of complications.. Surgery is not an exact science. It all depends on your body, how ill you are.. and if there is anything else wrong.. For me, I was on levels of prednisone so high it basically shut down my immune system. After my surgery I went for a walk in the hospital and was feeling fine Then made a mistake of going outside of the ward and I caught a staph infection. My body had no defenses against it and I wound up in ICU and in a nursing home with no muscular strength. Took 6 weeks to recover. and a few more months to walk and run normally again... They happen..

Adaptation after surgery.. eveyone is different I suppose. It's a matter of mind over bag. Personally, I wanted to get back to normal and you learn by your mistakes. It takes a while. but you adapt and return to a life you lost....

What sergery did you have and how long ago did you have it? Sounds like you really had a hard time of it.
This has been a verry hard yoar for my husband and I. Seems like every time we turn around something else goes whong. I have been in the hospital so many times that I can't count them.
Finding a Dr. that will help is hard as alot of them don't want much to do with me.
Please let me here more from you.
