Fungal rash question

I developed a small fungal rash about a month ago and have been having a hard time getting rid of it. I change my Hollister tape barrier every other day, applying an ample amount of Nystatin powder and skin spray beforehand. I also cut away the tape where it overlaps an infected area. I've gone so far as to not shower without changing the barrier. Every time I think I have it kicked it pops back up again somewhere else.

Any suggestions?

You may want to give a call to the ET nurse...it may need something else to get it to go away for good. I haven't had this problem (fingers crossed) so I cannot give you any hints...sorry!

Just a thought...sometimes when we change the wafer too often it weakens/irritates the skin in that area. Have you changed products recently? Do you wipe away the excess powder?

If you are not satisfied with the ostomy nurses recommendations, you may need to move on to a dermatologist to get treatment. Just a thought. I have psoriasis and sometimes have to battle spots around the wafer like you, cutting away the tape where the area is affected. Hang in there.

I went back to the Clinic the other day and met again with an ostomy nurse. She told me that the rash is, in fact, clearing up but I might need to try changing my appliance daily. She said everyone is different and there is no good way to estimate how long it will take to clear up completely. I trust her opinion as she is an ostomate herself and says she has dealt with similar problems before.

Aw lucky for you that your ostomy  nurse is an ostomate herself.  Who better to give you recommendations than someone that is IN your shoes.  Good for you.  How's the rash doing?  How close is it to the stoma?  Is there any way you can just cut the tape/wafer so that particular area can "breathe" or is it pretty much under the whole wafer?  Good luck to you.

I have resorted to oral Diflucan. Wow does that help. Not all th way but a lot. Between using the Mystop powder skin spray and diflucan it all helps. I also am using a steroid cream on the outer edges were I cut back the edges of the wafer were there is a rash. i am trying to get the yeast rash to lclear up before the 19th when I have the reversal.

LesaJT -- good luck getting that rash totally cleared up before surgery.  Sounds like you have everything under control and are attacking it from all sides.  Good Luck to you.

One of the ET Nurses I see, who is also a Nurse Practitioner gave me a prescription for Kenalog Spray. It can be hard to find and is expensive, but - it works so well for clearing up rashes! It dries fast.

Ohio43 - I forgot about Kenalog Spray.  I had a RX for that a long time ago but it was for psoriasis that was getting too close for comfort to my wafer on my belly.  I was insistent on getting something to knock it out before it had a chance to cause adhering problems.

Peggy, the ET Nurse wrote the prescription for me to use under my wafer to clear up irritation/rashes. It dried fast and cleared up the irritation quickly.

Peggy, who did your surgery at the Cleveland Clinic? I know it was so long ago, but just wondering since I go there myself.

And yes, Kenalog is awesome.

Dr. Victor Fazio was my surgeon, and if I remember correctly, "cookie" was my ET.  Long time ago.  Someone posted that Dr. Fazio was diagnosed with cancer.  Did you hear that?

Peggy, I did not hear that. It's Sunday 1/25...my husband and I are heading up to the Cleveland Clinic from Westerville, OH. I have an appointment in the morning at the Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Hospital and then I have an appointment later that afternoon at the main campus. I'll be seeing one of his associates, Tracy Hull. I'll ask how he's doing.
