Frequency of emptying bag vs j-pouch frequency?

The end ileostomy (permanent) and Jpouch are both formed from the end of the small intestine so the frequency would be the same.

When I had my colon removed they formed an end ostomy, then when they formed the jpouch with the end, a loop ostomy was created from up higher in the small intestine which had much higher output. Some surgeons do this step to give the pouch time to heal before the final takedown.

I probably go to the bathroom anywhere from 6-10 times a day, sometimes less. Some jpouchers are prone to pouchitis (inflammation of the pouch) which can cause more frequency but can be controlled with antibiotics/probiotics.

Thanks, everyone. I guess "urgency" is completely different compared to a normie's (and certainly less than an IBDer with a colon) and is virtually non-existent with an ostomy bag except that one can feel the pressure, weight and risk of leakage at that point.

I have no urgency with my jpouch...even a little less than I did with my ostomy. With the bag, I obviously didn't have an PHYSICAL urgency, but I got paranoid about emptying the bag, and was always checking it and rushing off to empty cause I didn't like how it felt when it got heavy.

With my jpouch, I can physically feel the urge to emtpy, and I know I can wait, so I usually just go when I normally have to pee. So I don't have any more bathroom trips than I had normally. Also, I always got up at night to empty the bag, And I sleep through the night every night with my jpouch.

6 to 7 hours? really? sometimes i see stuff within an hour! thats good for you that it stays in there, lol.

I agree with summer, it all depends on the person. When I had an ostomy I would empty it sometimes up to 10 times a day just because I hated when it filled up too much. With my J pouch I go 2x a day usually. Sometimes I'll go an extra time just because I already need to pee. I consider myself extremely lucky though, because from what I've read other people tend to go 5-10x a day. But again, even 5 times a day without urgency isn't so bad when you think about it. You're supposed to pee every 2 hours (does anyone actually do this?) so that's easily 5-6 times a day in the bathroom already.

i can believe going to pee every 2 hours! sometimes i go every 20 minutes, lol. Esp if am somewhere where its hard to get to the bathroom then i always gotta pee, lol.
