OMG! Bag full of blood!!!

Just awhile ago(about an hour) I went to empty, and my pouch contents were blood red!  It was not anything I ate as I only had cheerios this morning, same as usual  (4 hours ago).  I was so scared!  I know that the stoma can bleed easily.  I have gained weight lately, and all my jeans are rather tight.  I was doing some cleaning in corners (bending, weird scrunchy positions).  Do you think I could have just bumped the stoma causing it to bleed? I have checked three times since I saw all the blood, and it seems to be ok now.  I almost fainted..I cn't stand the sight of blood and there was ALOT!! This really freaked me out!!  .......

well it could have been that you bumped it. or it could have been you ate something else, maybe not this morning that left red dye, there is stuff you dont think of tht will do that

I have no answers just wanted to give you a hug.  Wow how awfully scary for you I hope everything is still fine now.  I know a teeny bit of blood can look a lot so let's hope it was that or that you had ate or drunk something you've forgotten about.

Wow, you would have had to have bumped it REALLY HARD to get a pouch full of blood...did you call your doc?

Are you sure it wasn't something you DRANK? I know when I drink fruit punch Gatorade, I get bright red output....

If not, I would definitely call you doc asap! I would not think that bumping it would cause it to bleed that much...

If you are wearing a 2 pc appliance, pop off the bag and check the stoma -- do you see a cut in it? Can you tell if it bleeding from the outside? I was in an auto accident years ago and my seatbelt did cause some trauma to my stoma; I did have some bleeding and it did take a little while (like several hours) to finally quite. BUT, by no means, was there a LOT of blood. Just a little, but it lasted for several hours.

Are you sure that you didn't drink something that could have caused your output to be red? Think real hard..... I scare myself all the time when I do that.

I would call your doc if you haven't already.... let us know how you are doing.

Thank you everybody for your replies.  It happened again.  No, I absolutely DIDN'T drink or eat anything.  It's blood for sure.  I took the whole appliance off and had a shower to clean it up and see if I could see where the blood is coming from.  It doesn't seem to be from inside, but from the outside of the stoma itself.  The last time I cut my wafer, I may have cut it abit small.  Could this have done it??  Maybe the edge of the wafer cut into the stoma or something??  I just don't know.  I didn't call a doc as I go see my surgeon tomorrow morning anyway to see about possibility of reversal surgery.  My husband is home with me this evening..and is super supportive.  I left the whole applicnce off for about an hour to let it breathe, and it didn't bleed then.  Just a little from the stoma itself.  It stopped and I put on a new wafer.  I am so scared every time I use the bathroom and empty pouch.  There was alot of blood there....or it seemed to be.  I know I was very active today and had some pretty tight jeans on.  Maybe I just cut it with the wafer?  If it happens again I will have to go in to Emergency.  I am so scared...Thank you all so very very much for being here.  I don't know what I would do without this Forum.. You are all so wonderful.  I will let you know how I make out with this.  Thanks again.....Cheryl

That is scary. I've thought I had blood in my bag b4, but then I remembered I drank V8 juice.
But since you are sure it wasn't any thing you ate, YIKES. Don't mess with that. If it happens again and it's really a lot of blood like you say, then do go to the ER.
I know that will suck. I try to wait myself and go to Dr. during day, but if something is messed up, you don't want it to get serious.
But maybe your old wafer just hit a vessel and kept rubbing against it (shudder)

it probably did just hit something, or it could have gotten cut by the wafer, they bleed very easily.
peggy, was it you that cut it with your fingernail and it bled for like forever?
I sure hope you get some asnwers and it all gets better!

Considering you had your ostomy surgery just last year, I'm sure there's a reasonable answer to explain the blood in your pouch. Please let us know what your doctort says. Good luck!

Thank you everyone.....I put on a new appliance last night..I cut the hole in the wafer a bit bigger, and no more blood so far...I had a rough sleep though...I was conscious of the position I slept in to try an minimize any weird shifting (?) of the wafer etc...plus I couildn't stop thinking about all that blood....it scared me so bad!..well so far so good...I am off to see the surgeon re my reversal surgery and I will tell him of my episodes yesterday...hopefully he can shed some light on it....tty later and thanks so much again for all your help!...Cheryl

YES!   That's right!   I did do that, and it did take a while to clot.  But all was fine after that.  No long nails anymore!  Thanks for the reminder, just what I wanted to remember.
