2nd failed attempt at colostomy reversal

  HI THERE

I HAVENT WRITTEN IN A WHILE....EVERYTHING WAS GOING VERY WELL AND THEN I WENT FOR 2ND TRY AT REVERSAL JAN 20TH, DOC COULD NOT DO IT.

  IN OCT 07 I HAD A PERFORATED SIGMOID COLON AND A MASSIVE INFECTION FOLLOWED, LUCKY TO BE ALIVE.  DOC TELLS ME MY COLON IS FINE BUT THE PROBLEM IS HE CANT GET TO THE RECTAL STUMP BECAUSE OF ADHESIONS.  HE ALMOST HAD IT BUT COULD NOT SEE ENOUGH TO CONTINUE SO HE ELECTED TO STOP RATHER THAN DOING ANY DAMAGE.

HAS ANYONE OUT THERE HAD MORE THAN 2 ATTEMPTS AT REVERSAL AND ACTUALLY DID GET REVERSED?  I PLAN ON SEEING A COLO RECTAL SPECIALIST IN THE FALL...I CANT EVEN THINK about DOING THIS AGAIN UNTIL NEXT YEAR! IF HE SAYS IM STUCK WITH THIS THEN I GUESS THATS IT BUT I REALLY HOPE I CAN BE REVERSED SOMEDAY..ANYONE HAVE ANY THOUGHTS OR

I'm sorry you are going through all of this.  I have no insight for you as my situation is completely different.  Someone will be along that can identify.  Best of luck to you!...Cheryl

I think your best shot is to try and find the most experienced CR surgeon you can. You might have to leave state in order to find one. There are some great surgeons in NYC as well as the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio is tops.

Diane, I agree with suebear...get to a specialist, where ever that may be! I will vouch for the Cleveland Clinic...they've done all my surgeries in the last 11 years. Plus there are many in New York that you could choose from and they'd be closer to you.

Maybe send your files to a few places and see what they think, meet with them and make a decision at that point. Just because your doc (I am assuming he's a general surgeon) couldn't do it doesn't mean it cannot be done by a specialist. You may not even have to wait a year!

HI ALL!

thank you for your input...i have heard of the cleveland clinic...but will insurance companies tipically let you go so out of network? i sure cant afford to pay out of pocket....what have been your expierences???

You'd have to check with your insurance company...it might be worth sending your records to someone for their opinion and then go from there...why deal with your insurance company if the attachment isn't an option.

I will also have to recommend Cleveland Clinic. And definitely talk to the insurance company. Who knows.... they have paid for the surgeon to attempt to do it twice... why not 3 times at a very, very reputable hospital?
