Erectile disfunction after total colectomy

Hey guys ,

I am having a proctocolectomy surgery friday in lousville Ky and my doctor gave me 3 things to worry about and they were bloodloss, infection and erectile dysfunction.

 

So in the interview he said Do you smoke? I said NO he said, Do you drink? i said NO and then he said What do you do for fun? I said It sounds like you are going to take that away from me and he about got under the table.

This is a big part of my life but not the most important I already have a Iliostomy and life can't get any better after that!!! I am going in to have this takin out because it looks realy bad and my doctor said it could turn into colon cancer so out it comes.

Wow No replys I have eather bent the rules or everyone has such a problem that they are not going to talk about it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They warned me about dysfunction as well, it's a very small percentage that will actually have problems in that dept though, so don't be overly concerned. My fun parts work just as they did before surgery, although I have to say immediately after surgery, like for 3 weeks they didn't--I think this was more of a mental issue then physical, so just a headsup on that. I'd say my drive is down a bit, but that could just be old age creeping up, ha.

Thanks for the reply. friday is the day for me and I am getting worried but I am not turning back now. 39 and not getting any younger but a fill better at 39 than i ever did at 21 to 35 Just going to do this ileostomy permanent.

Hey Crazybirdman....

Just went through this last July. Indeed, as Matt says, not a lot going on for a while afterward. :-)   Don't let it get you down, so to speak, if you experience the same thing. Give it a bit of time, and you'll be fine ! My surgeon told me the older the patient, the higher the percentage of dysfunction. You are still a young guy, it'll be all good.

I guess I should not be worried about anything because it doesn't help matters any, and then there are more important things like infection and blood loss.
but you know there is a higher power and that is who is in control and I believe 100% that now is the time.its gust that I feel so good and usually I am sick when I have some thing like this to think about.
I am talking my way through this guys!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't you know that the colon always starts behaving when it hears the word 'colectomy'? But, even it can't keep up the 'Oh, aren't I a good colon' act for long. It is bad and needs to come out!

P.S. - My surgeon told me that I might not be able to have sex after surgery, too, and I'm a woman, so go figure.

Hey,

I had the same thing done about three weeks ago. They told me there is a small chance of that happening. I'm only 21, so as you can imagine that was the main thing I was worried about as well.

I didn't have any problems and within a few days it was all back to normal.

Hey there birdman -

My husband has had a total proctocolectomy and we have been experience trouble with this. Altho, we haven't exactly been too active at trying either.  We have had enough to deal with with two years of sickness and 3 surgeries in 6 months.

He even used Viagra and still couldn't perform.  So we will see what the future holds in this department.  Not looking to good at this point.  I don't know what the odds are on this either.  He is probably the exception, not the rule.  Keep your chin up.

 Let me say - It is worth getting the procedure no matter what!!!  You will survive all the rest.  Stay focused on the positive and make sure to get an EXCELLENT Ostomy Nurse who you can call day or night.  There will be some trial and error with that so be a patient patient.

Hi Troy,

You mentioned that you feel so good these days, that's exactly what I went through as well ! I felt 100%, no troubles at all. The last time I had a major surgery( colectomy) I was so sick that I didn't care whether or not I even woke up afterward.

It was a real drag to stop feeling great while I went through this, but it is a necessary procedure.

Just think, about a week from Friday you'll be back home again, recovering and getting better !

Again, best of luck, and keep us updated if you feel like it after you get home.

Hey everyone
We have had a major ice storm here in Ky and lots of people are out of electricity. My bird pens are a disaster the ice collected on the nets and they all went down, glad everybody is inside I have to leave all this and go into surgery.
I have my chin up and we have a one and a half drive and we are starting out at 4:00 am. The ostomy part I know all about just going in to get all that junk out that I am not useing anyway. Like I said before I am going to choke the -ell out of the gallbladder with my large intestine when I get my hands on them.
I really am going to ask the doctor if I can see them!!
I will keep you posted,they say that I will have web access inthe room.

Hi Troy,

I may be too late but I wanted to wish you well and good luck with your surgery.

I was 53 when I had my colectomy and it was after long-term colitis which had developed into high grade dysplasia.

They found very early stage cancer after my colon was out but I had no problems with erectile dysfunction after the surgery.  It probably helped that the surgeon let me keep my rectum and did an ileo-rectal anastomosis but I think the surgeon mentioned that the risk for erectile dysfunction is usually pretty low anyway.  I was just glad I had the surgery when I did because by the time I found out that I had cancer, it was already out.  They didn't find any in the lymph nodes either so I didn't even have to go through chemo.  I'm almost a year and a half post-op now and am doing better than I should be.

Did you say that you are in the Akron area?
There is a place up there called Mt.Hope that I go to twice a year. there is a big exotic animal sale that I go to.And I love the little town it is all amish. Homes county is where it is.

Don't let the doctor worry you. I had a colostomy in '89 and then had it turned into an ileostomy in '04......and at 48 I still manage to "salute the flag" more than I want to admit!!!

crazybirdman...yeah, that is about 40 minutes away. I don't know too much about Amish country...I'm a transplant from Connecticut. But, now I am curious, what exactly are "exotic animals"? Does that mean lions, tigers and bears?!

What part of KY are you in? I LOVE going to Lexington every year for the big ROLEX Eventing weekend...such a beautiful part of the country:)

I can drive now THANK GOD I was driving everone crazy taking me everywhere.
I am doing great and things are looking up but slow,slow and I mean show. Did I say slow,I mean it. A lot harder than I thought!!!! But I had a lot takin out. All the way from the Elieo down to the very end and then sown up. Lost the opinion and everything, May as well laugh about it now because there is no turning back.

Exotic Animals are bears,tigers,lions,zebra,camel,things you don't see around the barn yard.
Birds like love birds, parrots, and finch, you name it and it will be there.

Slow is better then nothing, it means your funparts still work just fine ;) Give it a few weeks, I hate to say but maybe even a couple months and see what happens. I'm sure things will be fine. Like I said previously IMO it's more a mental thing then anythingt else. And hey if I didn't mention it already this is a good time to try some of those scenarios with your significant other which you might have been shy about before. "lets see if this or that works/helps" etc ;) Could be the best time of your life bud, it is what you make it =D
