baking soda, H2O ok to clean with

I've had trouble with leakage at night since released from hosp Mar 6; thus could not rest well. and afraid to eat. Home Health nurse kept saying change bag, but it would leak again every time so it was bandaid solution not a real soloution. No one knew what to do except change bag. Very aggravating when new bag would leak every time

So yesterday, I impulsively drove down three hrs to the hosp ostomy center and Jim RN saw me (I had poop all over me and they had to loan me a pr a scrup pants to leave).

Jim very calm and comforting. As he was cleaning he said "I think I know just what bag you need"

Because my stoma is flush with skin, maybe even concave to skin, he got one that forced stoma out. He also gave me a belt to wear that would help push out stoma so it would flow properly.

NO LEAKS, knock on wood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have slept a LOT. Back not hurting right now. I think it was just so tired.

My question: I have odor on skin around the bag. Everyone has preached: Be careful what you use to clean with because you want a good seal with bag.
So do you think some baking soda in warm water would hurt to clean around pubic area and around bag?

Getting my life back. We are writing the hosp to thank them and Jim for their help. It means a lot.

i was just thinking about whether you could put baking soda inside the bag today, lol.
I dont think that i would use baking soda on my skin right there, because i dont know what kind of film it would leave behind.
Water is really enough to clean it off, unless you have stool there, then a very plain soap, i use the gold dial bar, is needed.
I'm glad you got a bag that is workign for you! that makes such a big difference!

You can take a shower and clean both these areas with plain ole bar soap. You don't have to have odor with an ostomy!

You telling me! I feel like a new woman. I'm not afraid to go to sleep. And I'm not afraid to eat.
I got stool on me and I can't stand the constant smell. I feel better and can now take care of these issures

Are you saying I can just hop in shower and bathe normally? I thought the water would break seal of the bag.

Yes. When I had an ostomy I would put the pink tape (can't remember the name of it) around the edges of the wafer and shower away. Those who currently have ostomies hopefully will chime in and give you some helpful tips.

i just tape my pouch up on itself, so it isnt in the way, sometimes i cover myself with glad press and seal, but not usually.
Anyway, yeah you just take a shower normally, then when you get out use the hair dryer on it for a few minutes to dry it up.
Make sure you get it all the way dry or it will itch!

I shower with pouch on, no tape, no plastic over wafer and never had a problem, I don't dry it off very much either.

Convexity...I thought so!!! My stoma is the same way, and I couldn't live without it:) Did you go with a one or two piece appliance? The benefit to two piece is you can change out the pouch if you get a longer wafer wear time...pouches deteriorate faster.

Yes, you can shower...you can use the "press n seal" if you feel better, but I've showered for YEARS with everything on, and NO problems. I like the way the SureSeal keep my wafer dry, so I use that, but I can be lazy and not put one on! You could look that up in your supply catalog if you are interested...The "pink tape" is waterproof and you could "picture frame" the edges to keep them down...you can find that too in the catalog (I don't know it's real name, sorry)

If you use a hairdryer, use the lowest/warm setting...hot can melt things!

i always use the hot, but i really shouldnt i know
the reason i use the tape is to keep it up off me while i shower, otherwise it gets in the way, i dont use that to keep it dry it doesnt help with that

So glad I found someone like me. I feel so alone, but I finally found an Ostomy nurse who I will see on Monday. The ostomy nurses at the hosp told me I would have to use a one piece because my stoma is flush with skin and because I have such a small stoma. I think I have this straight. So I ordered a box from Edgepark this morning and I got a free box (they are old and probably won't hold) from the local pharmacy. My bag is hard at stoma so that it pushes stoma out.

What SureSeal? What is pink tape?

I think I will use the press and seal until I get fitted properly. I am so tired and discouraged by leaks. No leaks today tho

This has been a learning year for me, too...my last stoma needed convexity, but was much bigger! Mine measures 5/8" and it is very short...The longest wear time I get is 5 days but I usually change around 3 to keep my skin healthy...I use a two piece appliance from Hollister and have used the Durahesive from Convatec...both have done great with my situation, I just prefer the filtered pouch from Hollister better, so I use theirs for now...

Sure Seals cover the fabric part of the wafer/flange...kind of like the band-aid part...to keep it dry so the edges don't come up...It isn't a necessity, I just like how it drys faster after showering.

Pink Tape is waterproof tape for use with ostomies...it just happens to be a pink/orange color so most people call it "pink tape".

Ask all the questions you need!! that's what we are here for:)

Did Edgepark send you a catalog? If they didn't, ask them to send you one so you can see all the products out there for ostomates!!! When you figure out the product you'd like to use, make sure you order a good amount at a time...you should always have a few weeks worth on hand (I usually order 2+ months worth at once)
