Hi Lew. Welcome back. I guess your son is doing well. I hope so!
Anyway, Bratcat had a 2-step. Step 1 was done July 3 (created the loop ileostomy and j-pouch). She went back to school Labor Day. She was fine. She was a bit fatigued most of the summer. Partly because of the surgery, partly because she didn't have to push herself to heal faster. She took the summer to recuperate and adjust to the ostomy (which your son already has). She has always kept herself well hydrated but she did have a few lightheaded moments of dehydration. She learned to adjust. Her energy level was low for most of the summer. When she went out with us to the stores, she would use the electric scooter they offer (her suggestion not ours). She did have a dull ache in her upper back for most of the summer. Not sure if it had to do with her ostomy or the surgery itself.
By the time school started, she was pretty good. She still was a bit tired but she pushed to participate in everything. She marched in the homecoming parade (playing her trombone). Her step 2 was November 10. She was out of school for 3 weeks (although part of that was Thanksgiving weekend). She went back full speed and hasn't stopped yet!
I think your son will be fine with surgery in June. He may just have to plan ahead for the first few weeks of school (time it takes to walk across campus, adding extra time to allow for an appliance change in the morning if necessary, etc). Nothing that he can't handle.
