hey folks just joined the club. life w/ a bag. gonna be a challenge. just became a lifetime member. 3-27-09
trying to adjust. took a little bit to find out i needed convexity to stop leakage. seems to be working along w/ a belt. havent started back to work and summer is around the corner. using the o-ring stuff at 3 & 9 oclock as well.
anybody have tips for the heat when you start to sweat doesnt that take its toll on the wafer? anybody wear suspenders to avoid pressure on the meatball? seatbelts are a drag on junior too? i know there are some folks out that have dealing for years with some great tips. PLEASE HELP! your advice is priceless and a big thank you in advance. look forward to hearing from the veterans. i too will be one in time.

TheBag...welcome!! This is a great place for help and sometimes you learn things you didn't know you needed to know!!

Convexity with an Eakin seal is a great combination...glad they got you figured out quickly:) You shouldn't have to wear a belt forever...I've always stopped once my incision has healed.

I find that I have to change my wafer a day or so earlier than I would have when there's extreme heat but haven't had any other problems during the hot summer months...never had a problem at the beach either. I wear jeans that are on the tight side, belts and seat belts without a problem. You'll find that stomas are tough...you may just have to place your seat belt in a different spot if it bothers you.

The seat belt wont bother you after a while, your just still tender around there.

As for the heat, it wont bother the wafer and such unless its like really really hot, like in the 100's. in 2007 we had high 90s and i didnt have much trouble. Now last year we had temps in the 100s a good bit and i was getting shorter wear time. I also live in an area with high humidity and if its really really humid it get shorter wear time. Its not the flange that loosens on me its the bandaid part. I found that i can tape the bandaid part down and its ok.
It just sweats around it is all, but it will dry out.

Welcome to HW.... glad to hear you are doing so well. Have you been lurking for a while?

As far as wear time, I too wear convexity and Eakin Seals, and usually get 7 days wear time... When it is really hot, I just listen to the "itchies" and take care of changing whenever I start to itch. Have you gotten those yet? If a quick rinse of the pouch with cold water doesn't stop them, think about changing your pouch.

You sound like you are doing wonderfully. Keep it up. And let us know if we can help you in any way...

ive seen you on this site a lot. you had yours done at CCF as well. me too. yes i have to make light of it. youve got to be able to laugh. my stomas name is junior and we are getting along pretty good. yes i know the itchies actually i was burning and i knew the seal was going but the convexity and the eakin seals at 3 & 9 oclock along w/ a belt are helping. i just registered yesterday and im really glad there are folks like you out there.
im doing as well as i can w/ this big change in my life. my life is far from over but what change. i actually got the double whammy. i had uc in the early 90s went thru 3 ops wore The Bag for 11 months and went back to being somewhat normal until 3-27-09 and bam here i am with crohns. ive been dealt a pretty crappy hand but ill make lemonade.
how do you go 7 days? 4 is my max so far im probably paranoid? when i go back to work 5-18 thats going to be the real test. thank you peggy look forward to talking to you some more.

5-7 days came pretty quickly for me, once my stoma readjusted to it's new life. I will have to say tho that the Eakin Seal and using a convex wafer consistently keeps me around 7 days. Have you ever used stomahesive paste? I used it for a long time and switched to Eakin Seals a few years ago. I don't use the whole seal but rather cut strips of it and place them as you would the paste, just around the hole you cut in the wafer for the stoma. That is where the majority of the wafer breakdown begins.

Do you still have a lot of output? Has the output thickened up at all for you? Do you see a difference with different foods you eat yet? And, have you been warned about potential blockages with the different foods? I'm sure that CCF well informed you, and you had a temporary previously, so you know the game a bit.

Who was your surgeon at CCF? I've hear that Dr. Fazio has cancer. Did you hear anything about him while there? He was my surgeon and he was a gem.

yes i use the paste along w/ the seals at 3 & 9 oclock positions. i tear off what i need and apply keeping my hand over it for few moments. always making sure i get a good tight seal. im using the convatec 2-piece system right now and i also have the hollister both of which have the convexity. i had 2 convatecs go 4 days w/out any burning. 2morow is change day and i might try the hollister? output, now heres a subject. mostly solid but from time to time its water but no seapage. i chew my food to mush and i am still restricted. talking w/ the nurses sounds like dr. fazio is more administrative no1 mentioned about cancer. if true thats really wrong b/c that man has saved a lot peoples lives, you and i for example why would the good LORD above do that to him? he is just an incredible person!!
