Did/Does anyone have a bridge around your stoma? HELP!

I still have my bridge in, it has been two weeks. My surgeon wants to take it out himself and it won't be for another 11 days yet. It is causing my skin to get irritated. It doesn't seem to matter if I use paste, powder, wipes, etc. I use convatec moldable wafers.

I didn't expect any of this...well I knew about it. It's the whole I didn't really think it would happen to me thing. Ugh! I don't know what to do.

Does this get any easier?

I had one in, but they removed it before I left the hospital. I would call your surgeon and tell him your skin is breaking down from it and maybe you can get it out sooner.....my ostomy nuse took my out.

How do they take them out? Is it a snip and pull kind of thing? Did it hurt at all?

Yes, they cut it with scissors and then pulled it out....realiatically any of us could do it :) but no it did not hurt. I did not feel it.....hope you can get it out sooner :)

I had one too, for my loop ileostomy, but they also removed it b4 I left the hospital. I wonder why they've left yours in so long?

I was so afraid it was going to hurt to come out. But it didn't hurt at all! Just a couple of snips. No big deal.

I agree with XM about talking to the surgeon.

holy cow! he/she must have their reasons but if your skin is all messed up you better get a hold of the doctor pronto. mine was taken out 2/3 days after surgery. didnt hurt at all didnt even know they had done it. wow thats really odd. CALL YOUR DOCTOR! please keep us updated and hang in there glaciergrl!!

hows it going w/ the bridge? are you ok out there? have you called your doctor?

Sorry about not responding right away, my computer crashed. I fixed it but I lost everything!!!:(

I talked to the home care nurse when he came. He said it wasn't really the bridge causing the problems. We stuck a bunch of extra paste in there this time and I haven't had any problems. I am so nervous about changing this thing without a nurse. When I did it myself I got a leak... ugh!

Anyhow, I didn't call my surgeon yet. I'm gonna see how everything looks when I change it tomorrow. I think I can bear it for another week. My surgeon didn't take it out before I left the hospital because he said he would've liked to see the stoma sticking out a little bit more. He left it in for support. I can understand that, compared to the pics I have seen of stomas mine is pretty small and doesn't stick out that much.

I am doing much better the past couple days, except for the watermelon I ate. That was a mistake.

Thank you all for you help and advice. I would be completely and utterly lost without you all! I sincerely mean that!!!!!!!
