is having an abscess draines painful?

I posted a couple of days ago that after I worked out for a couple of days I had alot of pain near my ostomy. I thought it was just a pulled muscle but had a CT scan yesterday and was told it was a hernia and a pocket of fluid. No fever or nausea but it hurts sooo much. Anyway I have an appt Wednesday to have it drained with a needle. I'm sure some of you have had this done and I was wondering about the procedure. Does it hurt? Will I feel relief right away? How long does it take? I was told it is probably a sterile abscess because I dont feel sick, just sore. Thanks for your responses. Tony

Been there, done that. I went to see my surgeon and it was diagnosed right then and there so she did it in her office. She gave me several shots of novocane and cut a small hole to drain it. It was uncomfortable but not extremely painful (NOT like how it felt to have the abscess - THAT was painful!) I felt relief right away and since I wasn't put under, drove myself home right afterwards...

Once the numbness started wearing off, there was a little pain but she prescribed Vicodin which I took for a couple of days. The hole was kept open in case it needed more draining and it had to be packed but that healed in a month. It really wasn't that bad.

And another thing .. I can't believe you have to wait until Wednesday! This was not my first abscess, and they have always drained them right away! You poor thing!!!

I also have been there unfortunately....I had four abscess with two drains after my TC and had the needle aspiration after my abscess with ileostomy. Each time I was sicker than a dog with infection, admittance to hospital, and lots of abx. The drains were a pain in the butt just to have, but were just uncomfortable....the needle aspiration hurt a little, but both times I was given fentanyl for pain and versed (conscious sedation) and lidocaine at insertion sites. I was back in ER a week after aspiration on Friday and still have 5mm collection, but they are letting it go for now. I hope you will get some relief soon.

Thank you for your feedback. I guess alittle pain to relieve alot of pain is acceptable. I'll be glad to get this over with. I wish I was braver.
