Hi Everyone

I live in the UK and suffer from Gastro Intestinal Neuro Myopathy, otherwise known here as Pseudo Obstruction Syndrome.  I believe in the USA it is referred to as inertia, and basically my gut doesn't work!  I have had a number of surgeries, the last being in December and was a loop Ileostomy.   I am still experiencing problems and it has now been suggested that I have what colon I have left, removed, and my ileum or small bowel joined directly to my rectum (having had my sigmoid removed in 1995).  I am worried about incontinence, even though they are going to carry out proctogram tests first.  I worry that I won't be able to work afterwards, even though I have always been a very determined person and have carried on throughout it all.  I am now divorced and face everything alone, which is not always easy.

I realise this surgery is carried out a lot for CD and UC, but am particularly interested to hear of sufferers of the same problem, who have had IRA's done.

The IA site has been a huge source of support to me since December, but I cannot believe I have found people suffering from the same condition on here.  I have felt so alone since this all started in Nov 1987 following 4th laparotomy for endometriosis.  I believe they cut the nerves to my bowel, but I have to prove it!  People have always thought I imagined it, and the problems are in my head.  Thank goodness for my specialist, but it is so hard when not hearing of other sufferers here in the UK.

I had an IRA due to IBD and so long as you be careful with what you eat, your lifestyle, spending time listening to your body etc it should work great with no major probs. However, if you don't look after yourself and be conscious of your new bowel set-up and so on, you may be spending a lot of the time searching for bathrooms, rushing to the toilet, and carrying loo paper around with you! Does it work well in every case? No, but on studying stats through google searches in general it seems to be a very successful surgery, especially if IBD isn't involved.

I later discovered methods that could have prevented the whole ordeal... I would try and keep hold of your bowel if i were you, it is possible to make almost any disfunctioning bowel work with the right herbs and healing programmes (even ones with no nerve supply, really), study this site and these videos carefully:

Dr Schulze is the genuine article, he is no con man or quack healer, many people have healed themselves of many illnesses with his methods, your doctor almost certainly won't approve but it really could help,

Actually the IRA is not the typical surgery for UC patients; the IAA is the surgery we get. We lose our rectums due to the disease affecting that organ. With your surgery you keep the rectum which means you should have less frequency than those with an IAA. No one can predict the outcome for CI sufferers. Some do well but others continue to have motility disorders as the disorder is further up in the small intestine.

Thank you both. I will look into the herbal suggestions, although I have tried this form of treatment in desperation - have tried everything, and am pretty bad. Since my ileo it seems to be travelling upwards!

Thank also Sue. My concern is I had no feelings of wanting to go to the loo prior to my ileo, just pain, but my brain learnt to recognise this. My worry is without the pain, I may not get a warning. They originally wanted pouch formation, but this may be difficult due to the amount of adhesions I have (this is a really bad problem for me). It is so difficult knowing what to do for the best!

I can only tell you my experiance that happend to my daughter,who is 12 yrs old...your story is very similar to hers.she now has an illeostomy,but we did that only after everything else failed...she has no colon left ,and only about 1 inch her rectum left...we did the ira after several resections and after having the ACE for about 5 years...the IRA,did not work at all for her.we ended up in the hospital for over 2 months,waiting to see if it would work...never did,and after more testing,and more waiting we went ahead w/ the illeo...this is the best it has ever been w/ her!! Having some bumps in the road,w/ absorbtion, and weight lose,but quality of life is great ,...hope this helps...Talk to you soon.
