Back from stage 2 of 3 jpouch- OUCH

They let me out pretty quickly- I had surgery 7 am Tues. and out tonight at 6pm. I am ok just in lots of pain and taking Percocet. Stoma working fine and all other incisions ( lap) are ok. just really sore.... At least I knew kinda of what to expect this time. One more surgery to go--- don't know when yet.

Hi Jackie,

Glad you got home quick - i hope you cope with this recovery well.  Your right about knowing what to expect now - might be less stressful this time round. 

I take it you got a loop ileostomy now?  Did they do a bikini cut on you?

I have decided to go ahead with Jpouch - looking for my step 2 around sept time.  Following UCFree on twitter is a great insight.

Elli- Bikini cut and it hurts. Everything hurts- feels like some took salad tongs to my insides. The ileostomy is working fine- indented not raised like the end ileo so getting used to that. I am glad you are going through with it. Not feeling great right now but I still know this pain will pass and I will get better

Yeah- was hoping to see you and wife. The day was weird. I waited for Mary Lou to take out rod all day. She came at about 3:00 and then I was out.

You are right- Dr. Schochet is great. He said- you are doing well and now it is time to go home and recover. They were actually surprised to see me doing well in such a short time. Of course the pain is well--- Did I mention the pain? ha

Why is everyone going three stages? I had a total colectomy and they did the J pouch at the same time. Is that not what you did too? Why do would some one need an ileostomy and still have their colon? Is it in hopes that it will heal while with the bag? Just wondering...

Speaking only for myself mine is being done in three stages because I was too ill -- the surgeon wouldn't do the j-pouch at the same time as removing my colon.  He wants me to get healthier and off prednisone between the surgeries.  I'm off the prednisone, definitely healthier, and just waiting for step two now.

3 stages is normally the norm when the initial surgery is done in an emergency. The colon is removed leaving the rectal stump intact and an ileostomy is formed (the end of the rectum may also be brought of the abdomen too resulting in a mucous fistula). Once the patient has recovered stage 2 is performed, the rectum is removed, the pouch and a temporary diverting ileostomy is formed. Once the pouch has healed stage 3 id performed and the stoma taken down. In healthy patients it is possible for steps 1+2 to be done together, 2+3 can also be done in one step and in a small number of cases the whole surgery can be done in one step.

couldn't have said any better myself- 3 steps takes longer obviously but indicated in many cases
