My husband is exactly 1 week post takedown for his J-pouch and is doing great. I'm actually surprised how well he's doing in the urgency department. I had planned on the worst after doing all my research here but we were able to go out and run errands this weekend without him having to go to the bathroom while we were out.
Obviously I can't speak from personal experience but I think the more time with the Ostomy the better equipped one is for the pouch. My husband had a end ileostomy from 3/08 until 2/09 and then had a loop from 2/09 until 8/3/09 and he is not experiencing terrible urgency that I've read about here. He has good control and can pass gas without running to the bathroom (He's proud of this, that he can sit there and fart again...). I'm really surprised at his diet. I was all ready to do the BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast) diet for a month or two but we ate pizza 4 days after surgery and McDonalds twice this weekend, and he got the 1/3lb Angus burger. I'm just really happy that life is good finally and cannot say how great the J-pouch is so far.
