Hair loss anyone?

I have noticed the past few weeks I have been "shedding" a lot more than usual. Is this common after a colectomy or ileostomy reversal? maybe because I had an infection and was in the hospital for almost a month?

Any other reasons I should consider?

Any insights as to why this is?

Most importantly...how can I stop this? I have long hair and it is everywhere! It is scary...reminds me of my mom when she was going through chemo.

Yes, anesthesia can cause hair loss...it will slow down and eventually go back to normal shedding. I ended up cutting a few inches which seemed to help, mentally at least, until it stopped!

just the stress of the surgery can cause it anytime your body goes through something like a serious illness, a prologned high fever, pregnancy, surgery you usually get some hair loss.

Sadly, you cant stop it, you just gotta get through it. And it sucks! lol
I had sooo much hair and its long and it was all over everywhere

Go to a trusted hairdresser who has alot of compassion. I just went through this and she did completely inspected my scalp and reassured me the folicles are still there so it will come back. I have to admit that this could have the been the straw that breaks the camels back, but she was very kind...

I started losing hair before surgery due to being so sick and malnourished (sp?). The hairloss continued after surgery, and it is just now starting to slow down. So I probably lost hair from May through now. I had very thick hair before, and I probably lost half of it - it seems so thin to me now! It WILL come back though. I had experienced the same thing last summer when I had a severe UC flare-up. Lost hair for about 3 months, and maybe a few months later it was back to normal again. I know it stinks, but hang in there!

Do extra vitamins or supplements help?

I am going through the same thing right now. It took a few weeks post surgery for the shedding to start. I have another surgery soon and I am scared it will get worse.

Yes, losing hair is common. The body goes through the shock of the procedure, and the aesthesia, the changes etc. about three or four weeks after the surgery, I looked like a radiation case. My hair was falling out in handfuls. smhair The part on my hair was almost an inch across, with sort of stray hairs. I was horrified! My dermatologist reassured me that the hair would grow back, and it did. I got it cut really short until it changed its mind! Hang in there!

Hi, yes my hair is thinner since my op in jan but it is still coming out! shocked the doc has said it will come back. Bev x

(((big hug))) I feel for all of you... because my hair has been falling out, too. I had surgery on July 1 and asked my surgeon about it. He recommended that I take a daily multivitamin. I've also been using Rogaine for Women every day. I sure hope our hair stops falling out soon!
