PLEASE HELP REAL PROBLEM

went to bathroom at 3AM with the runs (I didn't know how fast) 2 hours later I was soaking wet with liquid feces all through the bed.  I cannot bathe or shower because of my leg in a external fixator - sow nearly a 3 hour sponge bath in a chair.  Worried about infection in the feet.  The chrcot disease thing.  The flange just broke. 

OK, I take a nap after this at about 8:30.  So crawl in bed with new appliance in slumberland.  I wake up again at 11:30 to an even more tsunami of bed ridden feces.  This time the the flange and and the sure seal broke.  Then I had my visiting nurse over for sterilizing the fixator - and there she blows again...I felt like a whale.

The last chapter in this 4 part leakage saga is it happenened yet again with acompletely clean everything and back to the basics.

Right now I am wearing a convatek active something in hopes of a new appliance will stop the leaks.  Don't mind the the liquid stool so much, but I am very afraid of this breakage and leagage of the holister product.  By the way, the holister product was not filled up both time to excess.

HELP HELP HELP

I thought sure seal protected me from things like this and what would make the flange break four in several hours?  Help?

hmmm you could have had a bad batch of stuff.


But it could also be because the output is compelty liquid, it could be getting under the flange easier, and sometimes when it comes out really quickly it casues problems.

You poor thing, that's awful to go through that and then not even be able to jump in the shower! No suggestions from me but you have my utmost sympathy.

You could have a bad batch or perhaps what you are using just isn't right for you. Do you think you could use some convexity? Or maybe the type of adhesive on those particular products do not work with your body chemistry? Is there a low spot on one side of your stoma where you may not be getting a good seal and need to 'build it up'? Maybe too much paste? It could be so many things. Is is possible to sleep in a comfy chair until you have a new product to try (this can help a bit when the output is total water)? Could you take some immodium to help thicken the output? If you are not getting a good seal and your output is pure water, you will keep having these awful blowouts. Good luck and I hope you can resolve this quickly!

sorry to hear that

so i take it your stoma is rather flatish and that is why you are using convex??

i use Hollister paste around my convex - i use Welland freestyle bags (in UK that is).  Have you tried the paste?? it might adhere better.  you shouldnt get leaks if you prepare your skins well and your tummy is a relatively creasefree surface - i am surprised your nurse isnt helping you more.

i hope you get it sorted.

Bob--I hope things are going better for you...here's my thoughts:

I agree with justjenjen that you may need another product that works better with your skin and if you are not using convexity, you may need to try that, too. Any type of seal my work better than paste...

Just remember that some people have to try a few different appliances to find the one for you...and here's my last thought: is the nurse that visits a regular nurse or a WOCN? If she isn't a WOCN than I would request a visit from one to get this straightened out. If you can travel to your docs office, do that, that way the WOCN will have all the different types available.

Its problem solving at its best...any info about your stoma will help us to give suggestions!

Bob - While I no longer have an ostomy, I'm bumping up this topic in case you need more advice, so others see it.

I hope you find the appliance that works for you. My colon surgeon wants me to consider an inverted colostomy (flush with the skin), that I would irrigate once a day (fancy way of saying giving yourself an enema, with tubing and equipment). She claims it only takes an hour so in theory for 23 hours a day I'd be stool free (wearing a large AmPatch to cover the stoma). As of right now we cannot afford ANY surgery, our insurance is sorely lacking and we have two daughters in college, but someday maybe I'd consider elective surgery. I'm just not "there" yet.

But you could at least ask your nurse if irrigation might work for you. It probably wouldn't be an option but I'd at least ask.

try coloplast sensura convex.
I did not need convex, but since I started using them, I have NO leaks.
I truly think coloplast makes the BEST supplies!

Ah i think you do need convex- even though i am a newby with this. when i was leaking all ovre hte place my nurse put me on convex. yes i was on coloplast sensura convex - and changed to another type of convex cause my skins was itchy. it def makes leaks impossible as it pushes around the stomas and causes the stoma to stick out a lot more. my stoma is nearly flush with my skin.

so this has gotta help you - surpised your nurse not got you onto a convex bag yet.
