Surgery is in two days and I am nervous

I have a few last questions and I am nervous because the surgeons office hasn't returned my call yet. Anyways my biggest question is sting my preop visit at the hospital they never said anything about an ostomy nurse, then later my surgeons office said I should have seen one that day. What does seeing the ostomy nurse entail? Does she mark my ostomy site? The hospital said j will
just see her after the surgery. Stent I supposed to be marked beforehand? Or not?

yeah you were supposed to be marked before hand
And they talk to you about the different kinds of bag and such available and give you some info and such.
Go ahead now and contact the companies for samples, so you will have them to try when you get home.
And call the dr office about the nurse, cause if the site isnt maked they wont know where to put your stoma and it might get put in the wrong place

I saw the ostomy nurse while in the hospital the day before surgery. She did the mark for the location. Are you being admitted in advance of your surgery? If so this is probably when you will see the ET nurse. If you're being admitted the morning of surgery you might want to call your surgeon's office and ask when you are to have this visit as it is your understanding they select the ostomy location, not the surgeon.

ya i finally talked with the surgeons office and they said its not really necessary for me to see the nurse beforehand, and said the surgeon will put it in the correct place, i will be sure and get a rough idea the morning of..its just temporary so its not really a big deal, i just hope they do the correct surgery on me! lol

oh ya and i am now clocking out of work for the last time for three months!! we have our ultrasound in about 30 min, and we will find out the gender of our baby!

I didn't see a nurse b4 hand either. My Dr. office told me the same thing.

I would still try and insist on seeing an ostomy nurse beforehand. Surgeons DON'T always know the best place on your body for you, more often it's just the place that's easiest for them to put it (sadly, a lot of the time this is on or above the waist line, esp for men, which is what you DO NOT want). The stoma nurse will watch you standing, sitting, take into account the type of clothes you wear etc and work out the best place for you!

Ummm... yes it is a big deal, otherwise you may be setting yourself up for a few months of misery with leaking bags due to uneven skin folds, unable to wear your clothes properly due to the bag interfering with your waist line, etc.

oh good point! see i am not up on all the ostomy things yet... thanks for the advice, the hospital said the ostomy nurse is on call, i will call tomorrow and see if i can see her friday

best of luck to you! let us know how ur feeling when ur up to it. i am scheduled for my j pouch for oct 5th and i am getting so anxious.
