I would still try and insist on seeing an ostomy nurse beforehand. Surgeons DON'T always know the best place on your body for you, more often it's just the place that's easiest for them to put it (sadly, a lot of the time this is on or above the waist line, esp for men, which is what you DO NOT want). The stoma nurse will watch you standing, sitting, take into account the type of clothes you wear etc and work out the best place for you!

Ummm... yes it is a big deal, otherwise you may be setting yourself up for a few months of misery with leaking bags due to uneven skin folds, unable to wear your clothes properly due to the bag interfering with your waist line, etc.
