Constant Constipation After Reversal of Iliostomy

I had cancer of the rectum and had a partial removal. I had my Reversal about three weeks ago and had loose stools for a week and then complete stoppage. My doctor advised taking Miralax, but it did not touch the problem of constipation. I have taken two Fleet Enema's, but I cannot do this much longer. I will be seeing my Surgeon on the 14th of October, but need some ideas how to counter act this problem. I have tried taking Olive oil, but no luck. I am now down to eating almost nothing, but cannot continue this for long......Any ideas, or help out there.

Hi Trooper!  I had my reversal done on March 9/09 and have the same problem.  I never did have the diarrhea that everyone else had.  I too have horrible constipation issues.  I find what works for me is ground flax seed (about two HUGE teaspoons twice a day on my cereal morning and night).  Also I drink prune juice when things are not moving along well.  This helps and keeps me going.  Have you tried prune juice??  It usually works quite well if you can drink it..it's awfully sweet.  Best of luck to you and I hope some of this will help you. ....Cheryl

...just another thought...I also eat alot of high fibre foods and plenty of raw fruits and veggies.  Good luck!

I had a total colectomy and still have constipation. I drink a lot of Plum juice. It actually taste great, unlike prune juice. I stay away from anything on the BRAT diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. I also watch my starches and NO fried food. Seems to at least help so i am not constantly worried about another blockage.

Take more miralax. It takes days and days to get it into your system. I take 10 to 20 doses every week. It builds up in your system and when I first started it, it took 12 days to produce any type of a bowel movement. You might need to take a mega dose to get it started. I know exactly how you feel. Constipation is the pits.

Also, are you taking pain pills? This can cause some major constipation issues.

Anyway, don't give up on the miralax...it just may take alot more to produce a bm. And it doesn't work like a stimulant laxative either. It forces water into the intestines and this can take some time to start working.
