Is it possible that the adhesive isn't getting completely removed when she changes the wafer? I change in the shower with hot water and lots of cleaning but have found that without using something extra I can't get the adhesive to be totally removed. If I miss anything I end up with the skin where the adhesive was left being red and bumpy. Just as a note: I am allergic to the adhesive in plastic band-aids and plastic tape so my irritation may be coming from this but based on my limited experience so far I don't think it is. I have followed someone removal suggestion to push the skin away from the wafer rather than pull the wafer away from the skin and that has helped. I also have found that shaving the area where the wafer goes helps to eliminate the redness as the hair growing back in under the wafer seems to add to the irritation. Someone on one the sites that I read suggested shaving as that was something that his ostomy nurse had suggested to him and it worked. I figured - it can't hurt to try and so far it seems to be working. I still have some redness but nowhere near what I had in the beginning.
I also use a Hollister new image system without tape on the wafer but have tried (and may switch to) the Convatec durahesive wafer (the Hollister bags work with it - but no floating flange and you have to work really hard to get the bag on the flange.
) as the Convatec durahesive wafer is one of the gentlest on the skin according to my ostomy nurse. I got two of them from her and they came off much cleaner and easier when it was time to change and my skin did seem to like them better. The Hollister wafer always seems to have a couple of spots where it doesn't want to come off. The nurse said if my skin didn't clear up with the Convatec I would probably have to go to an adhesive-less system because it might just be an allergic reaction. So far I haven't taken that step as I'm trying the Hollister again with the cleaning off of the adhesive and shaving to see if that will allow me to stick with the floating flange of the Hollister system. I do use the Hollister adapt ring barrier - if she's getting irritated skin around the
opening of her wafer I would agree that she should try using some of the barrier around the hole in the wafer to ensure that her skin is protected. I was instructed to do this every time I change as the barrier helps protect the skin.
Good luck! I hope you find a solution.
