What is the trick to taking a bath or shower WITHOUT getting the bag area all wet and having the sticky tape loosen/fall off?

There has to be something better than what my husband has been doing!  He has been sitting on a shower chair in the bathtub and using a shower head on a long hose.

I just posted on a Trigirl thread about wafers coming off when wet...they shouldn't! My guess is that it is something you are using when cleaning/prepping. What products do you use?

Personally, I use a Sure Seal over the tape part of my wafer. They make it easy to wipe off with a towel and are breathable so your skin doesn't get icky!

Hi Glenda. I use a one piece bag made by Coloplast (I believe) that has everything connected. I don't use any kind of "sticky tape." I do, however, use what the nurse called a "doughnut" that I place directly around the stoma and then attach the bag to that.

I just got the box out. They are made by Hollister- Adapt. They are called barrier rings. ref #7805. They work really well and I have no issues with the seal breaking. Another tip from my nurse was to "heat up" the bag before placing it on the doughnout. I guess heat makes it stay better. I normally place it behind my pillow and lay on the pillow to generate some heat. You could also place it between your legs or under your arms-lol- the tips they give!! It has worked out really well though. Good luck! How is he feeling otherwise? Today is 3 weeks for me and I am weaning off of the Vicodin. This is my longest stretch-12 hours! wooooooo-hoooooo!!!

He thinks that the leak was perhaps caused because his belly button is located right near the stoma.  So, when he cut out the hole, it wasn't sealing well around the belly button.

Where do you buy the Sure Seal tape?  He thinks that might be worth checking out!

(BTW - Are you in Ohio?  We live in a suburb of Columbus, OH.)

Darlene - My husband is doing quite well, considering it has been just a little over a week since his surgery. He's not on any pain pills. He has some acid reflux and has been sleeping in the recliner. He still has a sore throat and finds it hard to swallow. Also, he has to wear the compression stockings or his lower legs swell, but that's getting better with exercise. He has walked outside for a quick walk a couple of times. He doesn't eat too much and doesn't have much energy. But, I think that will take time.

I hope you're not having too much pain! That's so difficult to deal with and (I think) slows down healing.

when i first got mine everytime i got it wet the bandaid part came off, turns out it was the skin prep i was using, once i quit with that, that stopped happening.

But I use the sure seals too, cause Ohio76 told me too, lol and they make things sooo much easier!

you can order them from edgepark i know, and probably from different sites too.

That pesky belly button gets in the way sometimes!!! Can he cut the tape off so the belly button doesn't bother it? I've been doing that for years and haven't had a problem since:) I get my Sure Seals from Edgepark, too, you should be able to google them to see what they are about...and I am in OHIO, near Akron/Canton:)

Hy Tape is good to put over the paper part of the wafer. Hy tape is waterproof. Then when You're out of the tub just remove the Hy tape. If not left on too long, it should come off without peeling off the wafer. Then with a hair dryer set on cool, just dry any of the white paper of the wafer.

Sometimes I just quickly bathe the bottom part of me, not fill the tub too full of water and just move the end of the bag over to the side so it doesn't hang in the water. Then sponge bath the rest of me.

Those are my two ways. Hope it helps. Rosemary

My husband is getting a bit better at managing the bag. It's just taking some practice.

I showed him some of the products mentioned here on HealingWell. He got the Sure Seals the other day in the mail. Those things look like they'll help a LOT! Also, he got some tape - and I don't know what else.

Hi Glenda! Glad to hear he has something that may work out for him! Pain is getting better but still there:( My dr said to give it until 6 weeks to feel back to somewhat normal again- looking forward to that day!

I use the Hy Tape and tape some cling wrap around the entire wafer and bag. Any cleaning to that area can be done with a wash cloth later. The Hy Tape is your best friend! It keeps everything dry if you use the wide 2 inch type. My Ostomy nurse calls it pink tape, but Hy Tape is the only brand name, and it's really good to the skin. I highly recommend it!

I can't tell you how much the Eakin seals have helped me...they have made a world of difference and so has the paste. Won't leave home without them again....

I'm also a big fan of the Hy Tape.  I've been using it for almost 20 years!  I know many here prefer to try to keep their pouch ( personally, I hate when people say "bag") dry, but in my opinion, the pouch is now a part of you...and just like every other part of you, it needs to be cleaned regularly.   So what if you need to spend an extra 5 minutes drying it with a blow dryer?  Just like you and I ...you're pouch will begin to stink if you don't clean it on a regular basis!!!  'Just my 2 cents....
