Total Colectomy

First off I would like to tell a little about myself. My name is Brian and I am 34 yrs. old. I have just found out that I have Familial polyposis. It was recommended thay I get a total colectomy. My mother had colon cancer that spread to her liver and she passed away at the age of 54. I have a list of questions to ask my doc when I have my consult. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to offer advice or share the pros and cons from their surgery.

My areas of advice in need are:

A) Choosing between open or laparoopic surgery?

B) Having your small intestine attached to your rectum or having a J pouch made?

C) Colectomy vs. Colostomy

Any advice or pros/cons would greatly be appreciated.

HI bRIAN I AM NEW TO THIS SITE I HAD A SUB TOTAL COLECTOMY WITH ILEOANASTOMOSIS 12 MONTHS AGO. THIS MEANS THE RECTUM IS ATTATCHED TO THE SMALL INTESTINE. I HAD open SURGERY AS MY SURGEON FELT IT THE SAFER OPTION. IT IS NO WALK IN PARK, ALTHOUGH I COULD NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL THE PAIN RELIEF OPTIONS, COULD NOT HAVE ANTI INFLAMMATORIES DUE TO ASTHMA OR AN EPIDURAL DUE TO SPINAL PROBLEMS I WOULD SUGGEST HAVING ALL THE PAIN RELIEF OFFERED. I HAD AN ILEUS WHICH MEANS THE BOWEL WOULD NOT WAKE UP COS OF ALL THE MORPHINE. THIS DELAYED MY RECOVERY. ON THE POSITIVE SIDE IT TOOK ME 6 MONTHS TO RECOVER BUT I HAVE OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS TOO I AM SO GLAD HAD THIS SURGERY AND GOT AWAY WITHOUT HAVING AN ILEOSTOMY BAG. THE FIRST COUPLE OF MONTHS about 20 BM A DAY BUT NOW I FEEL BETTER THAN I HAVE FOR YEARS I AM MUCH STRONGER. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO GO THROUGH AT THE TIME BUT VERY WORTH IT. GOOD LUCK.
