HELLO, I AM NEW HERE, AM 26 YRS OLD, A NURSE IN FLORIDA. I HAVE SEVERE COLONIC INERTIA, COLONSCOPY TOMORROW MORNING.

ANY INFO ON THE PREP WITH FLEET PHOSPHO SODA?? I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN 3 DOSES, 3 MORE AT 8 TONIGHT. I AM AFRAID IT WILL NOT WORK- NOTHING HAS EVER WORKED, AND THAT IS WHY I MAY HAVE TO GET A SUB TOTAL OR TOTAL COLECTOMY. IT HAS BEEN 4 HRS SINCE THE ORAL FLEET AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE A CRAMP- JUST NAUSEA. I AM TIRED OF THIS- THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT I WOULD EVER ATTEMPT TO DRINK GOLYTLY AGAIN!! DID IT ONCE AND VOMITED EVERYTHING. I CANNOT HANDLE THIS. I HAVE LOST 20 POUNDS AND AM UNDERWEIGHT, BECAUSE I HAVE NO APPETITE. WHEN I DID EAT I WOULD GO WEEKS WITH NO BM. CT SCANS AND ABD. XRAYS ALL SHOW THAT I HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY FULL OF CRAP FOR AT LEAST THE PAST 10 MONTHS OR SO. HELP!!!

Oh Melissa sweetie, you have come to the right place!  Check out the post on the total colectomy group, there is a TON of information.  I am also a nurse who has been through everything you have... and more!  I had the colectomy about 2 months ago, and I am doing great.

As far as your colon prep, I have an odd idea for you.  Go LYtely tastes awful, but if you mix it with tang (remember the old drink) its not as bad!  For the colonoscopy though if you cant do anything else, they can do enemas until you are clean enough to get it done.  I was in the outpatient center for 10 hours worth of enemas before my colonoscopy, but they were able to do it and get what they needed!

Hi! Thanks for your reply. I am after giving myself 2 enemas, 2 dulcolax and half of that fleet phophosoda, have had major diarhea- appears to be mostly mucous though- i don't think i am near cleaned out. I hate to go for the colonoscopy and still be full of poop!I have had golytly before, I vomited and it is awful. I could never drink that. I am a difficult patient I guess!! I had a barium swallow done and gagged constantly- took me 4 ever to drink the barium, and I never will again. I am at the end of my rope- I just went to bathroom again- just funky looking mucous and stringy stuff- the doctor said it is like cement!! I am not leaving tomorrow until they figure me out- I don't know how they can clean me out but I am sure there is a way! Talk to you soon,

Welcome to the world of colonic inertia!  At least you are having results, when I did it I had NOTHING after 3/4 of a gallon of GoLytely.  If you are having results it is working a little bit, and you know you probably are just going to have to have enemas... it will all work itself out!  Make sure that they do biopsies because your next surgeon might require those (mine did).  I will kinda be around my computer for a bit tonight and tomorrow morning... good luck! :)

I never imagined that something like moving your bowels would cause me as many problems. I have been on every drug, done everything possible to be "normal" again. The colonscopy will be done with dipravan- have you had that? I am scared that they will tell me to go home and"prep" again because I am not cleaned out. But I know I am not so I will let the staff know when I arrive. I expect to be up all night,waiting to poop!! I hope I get an answer tomorrow as to whether or not surgery is the only answer-it is a big deal to have a colectomy, but I guess my misery will be over then. I am very self conscious and frightened of the scars from surgery. Vain, I know, but that it how I feel!! I have lost alot of weight and just cannot eat solid foods anymore- I have been living on coffee, water,and milkshakes for over a month now. It is hard to eat when it has nowhere to go!!

Geez, it sure sounds like a colectomy would improve your life!  I would just be honest right off the bat and explain what is happening.  If your GI is understanding, they will allow you do to enemas and understand why you are not cleaned out.  An average patient they would send home for noncompliance, but you need to be clear in verbalizing that you are NOT an average patient.... like I said I had 15 tapwater enemas that took about 10 hours... and they GI nurse talked about cancelling twice and I told her no... my GI stayed late to do the procedure..... and was very understanding about it, never made me feel that it was my fault.  I had tried to have the colonoscopy 4 previous times, and always failed the prep so was sent home... this time was different because my doc believed me!  That was the most important part!

Diprovan is a Good drug... sedative and amnesiac :)

Wow- 10 hours- your butt must have hurt! :-)   I trust this doctor, he is very understanding, I have talked to him at legth about the hell I have been through. I have to be there 7:40, whenever I have seen dipravan used,pt's had to be bagged- you think that is what will happen to me tomorrow? I want to be out like a light!! When did you get ur surgery? How are your bowels now? I am afraid that it would lead to incontinence or worse, a colostomy.

Mel - I was out cold, no diprovan but I had 10 mg of versed and 100mg demerol.  I woke up right at the end, but I dont remember anything, so yes I was out cold!  Yeah my butt end hurt after that... and they day after that I am not sure if it was the gas from the colonoscopy or the stress on the bowels but I was in ALOT of pain the next day!

I had my surgery on July 20th, and I dont even have diarrhea because they think i have inertia of the small bowel also.  I have about one BM per day... and if I go longer than one day I get crampings and one GIANT BM which is great compared to what I used to be able to do.  NO incontinence.  The surgery does have a 2 percent chance of an ostomy, but none of the people I know who have had the surgery have had that happen.  Check out the colectomy thread, there are actually like 6 parts I think... LOTS of information about the surgery.. :)

Emma, thanks for your info, helped me alot. i am leaving in 20 mins to go to appt.,slept for 5 hrs, no BM till this morning, but am not cleaned out. How much wt. did you lose with the surgery? just wondering, becuase I am aleady underweight- 5'9 and 118 pds. Well, wish me luck, I will write you later!!!

Well, I had a long and complicated hospital stay, longer than most.  I had a post op ileus, and so I was in for 9 days.  I lost 20 pounds at one point, but I have put most of the weight back on.  I am able to eat healthier foods now, healthier than before.  I had to stay away from high fiber diets because it made things worse, now I can eat all the fruits and veggies that I want! :)  Good luck, your in my prayers today!

Hello!! I am home- it went well, and my prep worked- thank god.was asleep the whole time- it was great. still sleepy and hungry, but home with my doggy!! The results- doc said that there were no polyps, tumors,etc.. but a kink in left side- was twisted, causing the pain and stool could not pass through. he straightened it and i have to get a colonic transit study, then go back to see him oct.6th. what do you think of that? does it sound like it makes sense? what did ur colonoscopy show?

My colonoscopy showed dilation of the sigmoid flexure and the cecum. No polyps, and no other abnormalities and just hypoparistalsis of the colon.  If you had a blockage or a twist maybe that will solve your problem?

I am glad your prep worked. I was wondering if anyone else has ever taken visical for prep. When I had my colonoscopy 2 years ago I was givin the choice of the liquid or the visicol pills. I obviously chose the pill. It worked great. They aren't tiny but I was glad to have them. When I went in to have the BCIR surgery done in July the hospital made me drip prep and I threw it up instantly. Then they brought me something else that I only needed to take like 1 oz but was like drinking pure salt. Horrible. I asked about the pill and they said they never heard of it. I am glad my GI did because I would have never been able to prep for the colonoscopy with that drink crap.

I wonder if I ever need my pouch scoped if I will need to take that stuff to clean me out or if intubating will be enough. I hope so. I am hoping I am done with all that stuff now that the colon is gone.

Anyway as I said glad it worked and hope you feel better soon.

hello!! I slept all day, finally just ate something. I go back to doc Oct 6th- he said I have to have a colonic transit study done first. I ma hopoing that whatever that kink was will help my bowels get back to normal. No wonder I had pain and could not move my bowels!! I will see what happens over the next few weeks I guess. Do you know anything about that test I need?

Janene - actually I had the visicol prep before my surgery and I had to argue with some freinds at work because they had never heard of it.  It is a very old prep, that should be used more often but I am not sure why it isnt!

Mel - the colonic transit study is very easy. You get an abdominal xray and then you take one pill.  In the pill there are 24 small little radiopaque spaghettios that show up on xray.  You come back usually 5 days later and take another x ray.  This xray shows how many have passed.  If you retain more than a certain amount, every place is different, this is indicative of colonic intertia or slow transit constipation! :)

Hi ladys! i am 24 yrs old..and have gone through this all...for i think most of my life. but the past three years have been terrifying. in august of 2008 i was drinking a gallon of golytly every two days and then it stopped working they have not come up with a way to clean me out since then. they are saying there is around 15 lbs of stool in me..which before when they cleaned me out with nose tubes and the works it was about that much. i am in a insane amount of pain! i have not had a bowel movement in four months, way way underweight do not eat of course hardly sleep. i go to mayo clinic which is awesome but it took forever even there to find a surgeon who would even consider doing the surgery to remove my troubled colon! my surgery is now scheduled for feb 1...and they have no clue how they will clean me out for this! i am crying every day right now and doing seven treatments a day, no pain medicine. this is all like living hell. you would think i'd be excited for this surgery..but really i'm scared out of my mind! i'm not sure if it's the right thing to do i can't imagine life much worse than how i feel now healthwise but i know it can be and i'd hate to do that to myself. plus the surgeon doesn't really want to do it!! grr!! can anyone give me some positive advice?? thank you so much and if i can help with anything just ask because like i've said..i've been doing this for a while.
