Ok, what kind of underwear do you wear with an ostomy? A few of the ostomy sites have me thinking if it will or won't be the same?

I prefer boy-cut or lower rise (not bikini tho). What can I expect with this?

i wear boy cut or hipsters, the flirtitude brand from jcpenneys. They come in really cute styles and they aren't too awful expensive! Also there is a brand there called amibrielle (i think that's spelled right) and their boy cut ones are pretty good, esp for a tight pair of pants of something, cause they are madeout of something kind of stretchy. BUT it seems that after i wear them for a while then they get a hole where the tail of my bag lays on them. So, i dont wear them much. That brand also has some pretty sexy ones, lol.
Maidenform makes some boycut ones that are ok, they just dont hold my bag down as well as the flirtitude ones.
I dont like the ones that come up on my leg casue my bag wont stay tucked in as well, but i dont buy special underwear from a site or anything.

I wore basically granny panties, and kept the appliance outside my panties. I wore tops long enough to keep the bulge covered so to speak. BUT I tried to not let it get to the point where there would be a huge bulge. Usually only if I drank something high in sugar/caffeine, or milk products, I could predict a large bulge.

Good to know! I love the kind that sort of conform. They aren't snug, just conforming, if that makes sense!

Normal undies should be fine - some people even wear bikini underwear cos they don't mind their bag hanging out over the top. I prefer to wear my bag tucked into my undies so I wear high legged full briefs and they do just fine. Specially made ostomy underwear usually costs about 3 times the price of normal underwear and only because they have a special pocket built in for your bag which, in my opinion, isn't needed. I've sampled 'ostomy' underwear and disregarded the pocket altogether and just wore them as normal underwear.

High cut briefs for me- Hanes brand. I have to tuck the bag in. It is the only way I am comfortable. I am on the large side so anything bikini is just offensive yeah

I buy the Target version of Spanx called Assets. They are high waisted, high legged and have a little control to help hide the bulge.

Do you buy a size larger than needed to account for pouch filling up so it wont leak? I wanted to try these but feel so tight across stoma and am afraid of leaks? Thnaks

No you dont need to be a bigger size. your undies will stretch if you bag fills up.

I have bought one pair of ostomy undies and they were pretty expensive for what you got. The extra pouch does keep bag from hanging out the leg. I will have to try some of the ones you guys have mentioned.

I tuck my pouch in so I tend to wear hi-cut briefs, and I have a bunch of different brands...but tend to use the cheap Hanes ones the most:)

boy shorts or the hi-cut briefs work the best. And, sad to admit it, BUT..maternity underwear ain't too shabby either! It's all I could wear for a long time after the surgery because of the incision...but now it's just plain comfortable.

Im so glad this is being discussed!! I am having my colostomy on Monday and thought "hm, I probably need to get some new underwear" I currently wear bikini briefs by fruit of the loom, but know that I won't be able to wear them after Oscar has made his appearance. (yup, have named my ostomie already)

www.ostomysecrets.com - Also, I went to Walmart and bought the tight fitting under garment that flattens the stomach area. Then I cut a small hole in it for my stoma area as to not block the stoma. For bedtime, I always wore my hubbys boxers or large shorts and t-shirt.

Ok - maybe I'm in the minority to wear one before surgery. shocked It took me about a month to try it but my old underwear (low rise) that still fit (I lost some weight) are just fine with me. I wear my bag on the outside of my undies and wear a mens tank under my shirt during the day to hold the bag to my body.

LOL you know whats funny, is i have never been able to wear thongs, i tried but i always felt like they were going up my butt. And after i had surgery, i thought, hey i bet i could wear thongs now, cause they cant go up my butt now!

Hi, I have seen these I wondered if they are TIGHT enough to make the bag leak if it fills fast? Or do you buy a size larger? I tried the ostomy secrets underwear and really like them but are very exspensive! I have a 2 piece appliance since 1977. DDo you wear over your regular underwear? Thanks

I love this thread! I have a bunch of brands and like to tuck my pouch in so I usually get the high waisted ones with some stretch. I wore thongs up until my last abscess 2 years ago...the incision is still not healed and all my favorites are tucked into the back of the undy drawer waiting for it to finally heal. To sleep, I love mens boxer briefs, they are soft and hold it in enough, but not enough to be annoying.
