Is there anyone who has had the BCIR procedure?

I am hoping that I am a candidate for the BCIR surgery and am trying to learn as much as I can about it. I would like to hear from anyone that has had this procedure and how your quality of life is. Also, I want to know if you've had any adverse effects from the BCIR.

You can talk with BCIR folks at www.bcirostomy.org I believe they have an active discussion board. The 2 hospitals that perform the BCIR are also good at getting prospective patients hooked up with current patients so you can talk to them; at least they were when I was considering that surgery. In the 9 years or so of being on ostomy boards I have only run across 2 BCIR patients; their numbers are small as compared to j and k pouchers.

The BCIR stands for Barnett Continent Intestinal Reservoir! It is a continent ileostomy. They remove the large intestine and rectum and make you an internal pouch out of your own small intestines. Then, you stick a catheter in the pouch and empty the waste 3 to 6 times a day. The stoma is a small button hole that must be covered with gauze or a bandaid because mucous accumalates there and also to keep it protected.
