Okay......what is it with "bag" nonsense???

Granted,  I expect to get negative opinions from those, as it relates to one of my former posts.  But,  check your ostomy supplies.  Does it say the word bag anywhere on the box?    'Didn't think so!!!!  It has such negative connotations...yet many still continue to use that word!  I just don't get it!!  Why do so many continue to use a word that has chastised our "conditon" for so long???  I'm baffled!

And please....spare me the responses that I'm attempting to be the ostomy vernacular police.  We've been through a lot.  Those that aren't aware, poke fun...plain and simple.  That word should be erased from your vocabulary.....period!!!!

lol, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks - I've called it my bag since I was 10 years old - don't think I'll get out of the habit any time soon :)

Shaz...you were 10 years old.   Times have changed!  BTW....how are you??? We haven't spoken in a bit. 'Hope all's well, sweetheart ( BTW....don't mean to be belittling with  the sweetheart thing. The bottom line is I've known you for years.  And....like many here...you are like family to me!!!)).

So you don't like it when our appliance/accessory, etc. is called a bag?  I'm not trying to be snotty or anything...just wanting to fully understand wink

Im not trying to be a jerk, but Ive called mine a bag from day one. Ive never had anyone make fun of it.

I prefer to call my j-pouch a pouch, so I have a distinction between the two.

Unless im going into GREAT detail, he is Oscar and his clothing. I really don`t say `bag or pouch` just his stuff...though I have a HUGE family reunion at the end of the month in Ontario and am positive there will be some questions and answers that might involve bag andor pouch.

I'm with NASCARon. I call it a bag. I had gastric bypass five years ago and that's what I call my pouch - that's how it's referred to in that field. I recently had my ileostomy taken down and I always called the appliance a bag. The support group I go to refers to it as a bag, too. For me, pouch and bag are two different things. I'm not offended when I see someone call it a pouch and I don't think bag is a negative connotation. When I talk to people about it, they understand bag over pouch, anyway. I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

i actually posted on one forum and called it a pouch and a woman said, im not a kangaroo!
lot of times if im talking to jason about it i will just say i need to go change my thing.

I am new and I just am going to put this out there. Whatever it is, I know its part of my everyday life. I don't care what it is called, and I am happy it is there, for it meant an end to the pain I lived with for 8 years. People make fun of me, friends don't hang out with me anymore, and others stop respecting me when I became "different" because of whatever you want to call it. But i am still glad I have one. What people want to call it honestly really shouldn't matter because very little can compare to the pain we all probably felt when we found out who really loved us and who didn't.

You know something........I've voiced my opinion on this subject several times.  However,  many here, who are now comfortable with themselves about their ostomy disagree with me.  That's cool guys.  And you wanna know something else?  It shows that you've adapted to your.... "whatever", and now say "to hell with those that want to change me". BRAVO!!!!  Please except my apologies.  This will be my last post on the subject......promise!!!  Plus, like I said earlier....I've know many of you for years and consider you like family.  I never meant to offend anyone. Sorry!!!

BTW....it still doesn't mean I might not  throw up a little every time I hear the B word, lol!  I guess I'll have to deal with it!

I say bag because when I say pouch, I am thinking of and referring to the internal pouch.

I have nothing but hate for mine anyway, so I don't mind the negative implications if there are any devil

That's silly. If the term "bag" was ever meant to be negative, then it has been successfully taken back, like "****." I just got the thing and I've been calling it a bag since before I got it. Who cares what people call it as long as they are talking about it and issues like IBD and IBS can become less taboo? I'd rather be able to say "I have a bag for blah blah" and not get a look like Ive got the plague or a second head than to worry about stupid things people might refer to my ostomy as.

Edit: well, apparently the people at HW haven't heard that the "Q-word" has been taken back!

im new here too but this post caught my eye.. my opinion of the matter would be that anyone who has been strong enough to endure the hardships of needing a 'bag' is entitled to call it whatever they want! if 'non-bag-wearers' are referring to it in a way which offends then that is fair enough. But as a proud owner of one we should be entitled to call it anything we like as an individual. I (and my friends) call mine a 'poobag' as if you cant laugh about it sometimes its just going to get you down!
I hope this post isn't out of order. It's just my thoughts :)

i am supposed to have my reversal on may 4th 2010. my doctor has prescribed sandostatin injectable for me to help control the diarrhea(which it does). so if your insurance will cover the medicine talk to your doctor as that is what worked for me. it is very costly ($700.00) monthly that is why i had to get the ileostomy in the first place. i am looking forward to no more bags as i havehad my ileostomy since 2005. hopefully i wont need it but the insurance had covered it and i will have it around for the future. it has a shelf life of 3 years.
