Oh yeah, have you tried miralax? Anything like dulcolax, correctol, ex-lax, etc. make me VERY sick. You may have to take way more of the miralax than is recommended, but it does not make me feel as bad as stimulant laxatives do.

If I don't take miralax, I feel terrible. I need it to keep things moving. I also take a small amount of metamucil to keep everything from being too liquidy. I take both twice a day or it's not good. I also have to use an enema at least a couple times a week, especially if I've eaten chips, or something I know I shouldn't!! For the most part I eat most everything, but chips, pizza and alot of cake, cookies. etc stop me up. It's not great, but so much better than before. The biggest problem is that I still go several times a day, and after eating at night and taking miralax, etc it takes 5 or 6 times until I'm through. are you like this?

Tracy - I’ve had several tests run . . . CT scans, x-rays, colonoscopy and now Sitz Market study. During my first visit with the gastro doctor, he told me that he would refer me to a surgeon after the colonoscopy but after the procedure he wanted to do the Sitz test. I can understand that but I do wish he would have been more honest with me. Then again, maybe he saw my desperation and just wanted to take me to the next step.

There is no help for the colonic inertia? That is a depressing thought!

Would you believe that I don’t know what biofeedback is? Is that basically mind over matter? Would love to know more.

ROFLOL – Yes! I’m like that. Gas bounces around inside but cannot find its way out. Nothing finds its way out on its own.

I’m so glad that your surgery was a success and that you are feeling much better than before. It’s great to know that there are successful surgeries. I’ve read that sometimes a person goes through the surgery (and trauma!) only to be back where they were to begin with in a short time.

I haven't had a bm since Monday (colonoscopy was Tuesday morning) so I know all the Sitz markers are still here. :)

Val, the only"cure" for colonic inertia is a total colectomy. Most are not constipated anymore after they have their colons removed. But, as you have read on here...some still suffer constipation, some have severe diarrhea, and some, like Judy, are absolutely perfect with bm's....she has 1 to 2 bm's per day without the use of laxatives or suppositories. I have read several places that women that have had total colectomies for colonic inertia, that 87% of them are happy with the outcome of the surgery. Pretty good odds if you ask me.

But, my doctor said I was not a candidate for the total colectomy because of the pelvic floor dysfunction. He said my rectum still would not work to get the poop out. Biofeedback is physical therapy for the rectum. LOL My husband thought that was hilarious.

Yeah Janie I am that same way. I forgot to take my miralax on day and I suffered the whole next day at work. I felt terrible. I had the worst rectal pressure. I felt like I was in labor it hurt so bad. I am just concerned that we will be on this stuff forever and that one day it will no longer help. As long as I take it then I go about six times a day. And it is mostly liquid. But I am fine with that because at least I feel well.

Nice to meet you Val! Good luck with your xrays this week. Just dont take anything to make you go, cuz then the doctor can really tell that you have a problem. When I had mine done I had not had a BM in about 15 days. Then when I did after all the xrays were complete it was just awful. I didnt want to mess up the test though.

Lizzie and Jen, how are you? And Judy and Hodaya? Havent heard from you lately. miss you!

I'm sure I'll probably be on miralax forever.....do you take it twice a day? Before I started taking it, I had horrible rectal pressure all the time. I pray it won't stop working, if it does, I'll deal with it then I guess. I don't think there's anything wrong with staying on it forever....my doc says it's ok. I really don't have an option at this point!

Hope everyone else is doing ok...I know Hodaya said she wouldn't have a computer for a couple weeks, but it sure is quiet! Hope that means everyone is feeling well!!

Marisa I am doing ok. I am like you I have to take Miralax now at least one dose a day to keep from having the constant rectal pressure. I also have to use suppositories just about every time I go to the bathroom. I can't believe that I am dealing with this. Prior to surgery my main concern was that I would be going to the bathroom too much. They tested my small intestine prior to surgery and told me the transit time was good. Now 4 months after the initial surgery they have tested it twice during recent hospital stays and it is very slow. How does this happen? Taking Miralax daily is still better than how I was living prior to surgery, and despite all my complications post surgery I am glad I had the total colectomy. Friends and family are always asking me do you wish you didn't have the surgery. Prior to surgery I would be sick 4 out of 7 days and taking massive quanitities of stimulant laxatives weekly was a horrible way to live. Of course unless you have lived that way like we have for years they just don't understand!

As for now my biggest obstacle is getting energy back. I go to the doctor Thursday to discuss nutrition and vitamin supplements.

I hope everyone is doing ok. I talked to Lizzie the other day, and she seemed to still be dealing with alot of pain and lack of energy. Everyone is in our prayers.

Hello all, especially the newbies!!! (so sorry I have not had a chance to respond to many of you, but I am definately not your typical case and would not want to scare you!)

well, I am doing ok. Still on the Dilaudid 8 mg every 4 hrs, valium, and norco for pain and I go to the pain clinic Mar 4. I am headed to the doctor roght now to check my blood clot. The anemia is better, but I still cannot do much of anything. I miss all of you and hope that your continuing to do well. I am so happy miralax works well for so may of you. I will try and post later. My mom is beeping for me to come, weather is bad so the drive is longer. My pouch is STILL working though!!!!! and this is very encouraging. I learned the hard way I cannot eat angel food cake. I clogged my whole tube up and it was a disater I was crying and panicking and I must say yesterday was by far my worst day ever. You really have to chew and drink with this puch, much like an ileo and I have to be very careful. I have gained 2 lbs. I am up to 98!!!! So thats good, but it hard to get an accurate weight with this whole bag contraption attached to me so who knows what I relly weigh. Oh well. I look better....my hgb is better and I am not as sketeton appearing, but still have about 10 to gain. I love you all and thanks for your support. I will try and write more later. Pray for me to have better pain control....its really been the hardest thing, but they did tell me this surgery was going to take everything out of me and it sure has. Definately harder than all combined!!! but worth it so far! I hope to give all of you with pelvic floor issues some hope. I get the tube removed wed in Cleveland and I will be appliance free. Still packing my infection woulnds, but slowly healing. I love you all so much and miss you dearly.

Tracy- I will def send you pictures....do you have pic over your phone, that is easiest for me. I can send you some now if the giant tube.

Lizzie, glad to hear you are starting to get better. Sounds like you have been through hell and back.

Leslie - how are you? How did your surgery go?

Shannon, how did you make out with the sitz marker test? Did the dr. say anything about you taking something? I am "redoing" my test. I have been sent by the surgeon to another specialist who will do the anorectal manometry. He wanted to do his own sitz test. I am not sure why. I took 50 of those things this time (I guess 24 out of 24 being left after 5 days wasn't enough). I have to go back this Thursday (six days) for the x-ray. I also getting the manometry done that same day. It is not going to be fun as I will have to do the enema in the dr. office. UGH! The secretary scheduling the procedures tried to do them back to back. She just didn't get it. She has been a pain in the ass since the first time I spoke to her!! The doc will give me the results right then and there, so that is good. I need to now schedule the appt with my surgeon. The biggest problem is that these docs are 2 1/2 hrs away. Of course I need to be there on Thurs at 8am and they are calling for a Nor'easter, so that should be interesting!

The NP at the new office made me feel like an idiot. She thinks that my diet will help my problem. I guess I just don't buy it. It isn't going to make my colon any smaller (50% bigger than "normal"), unloop it and get rid of the CI.

I thank everyone for their posts. I am sure most of you have told your stories time and again as new people come on here. It is nice to be able to talk/vent to you all. My husband is being a complete ass about the whole thing. He doesn't get it. He also has a very poor way of showing concern or care (which I have known for 15 years) that doesn't help. Yesterday I was getting groceries and my 12 year old looked at me and said "your stomach hurts doesn't it?"

Well, I need to work. I am not sure why, but I have a horrible problem focusing these last several months. All I can think about is the stomach pain, bloating, nausea. It is really consuming me. I HATE IT!

Well just got off the phone with the doctor. My sitz test was normal. I am very happy about that. Now he wants me to do the defecography test. I am so mad, sad, angry that I could cry. I knew that he was going to tell me to get this done considering I saw all the markers down in the rectal area on day 4. Why is it bothering me so bad? Well when I told my husband what the test entailed he laughed. Can you believe that? He F'n laughed at me. Please tell me what your experiences were? If there is a problem...I guarantee I cannot do biofeedback. We having been paying out the arse with all these medical bills from my last two surgeries. I am not paying for anymore. What if this test comes back normal? Is he still going to take out my "extremely" long part of my colon which he says is making me feel like I am sitting on a ball a lot or is he going to do nothing? I thought this was all going to be much easier than this. I don't want to spend all this money only to be told to do some biofeedback...if that is part of the problem....and still be in the same boat. Obviously, I have some type of pelvic floor issue or else my bladder, uterus, urethra, and a rectocele would not have taken place...right? I don't know what I am thinking. I am just so darn mad right now and am thinking that maybe I would just live with this for the rest of my life.

Hi Girls,

Was hoping to get on here more but have had some family issues; you've got to love those college children who think they can know it all and can fix everyone, so glad I'm not growing right now.  Anyway, asthma is finally under control but sinus infection has not cleared up even after 15 days on cipro, will most likely have to call my ENT & allergist, so thought I was done with them.

My stent is still very painful but I only have a few more weeks until the next surgery and hopefully this one will work so that I don't have to have major surgery this summer, unfortunately after this surgery I'll still need another stent until July cry but it should be my LAST!!!!!

On a good note, my shoulder is becoming unfrozen!:):) with lots of agonizing PT but it's working; I go to the ortho dr next week to find out what is wrong with it that caused it to become frozen so my therapist can start working on that.

Now enough about me; Lizzie-So thankful everyday that you are starting to heal.  I have prayed and continue to pray for you. May you be surrounded by Angels always. Love you.

Janie & Marisa-So glad you are doing well! I too use miralax but only about once a month due to my spasm meds and if I eat too much wheat.  You might want to watch your wheat intake.  I too have the whole full rectum and not emptying issue, but it's not anything like you girls.  I don't remember who was on here talking about nutrition and vitamin supplements, it may have been Jen, just want you to know that both of those are an extremely important part of my surgery's success.  I have been seeing a kinesiologist since just before my surgery who is also a nutritionist, so I use several natural supplements and essential oils.

Shannon-Glad to hear your sitz marker test was normal; you don't want any unnecessary surgery, hopefully your dr will find out if you have a pelvic floor problem and tr to help you.  I will keep you in my prayers.

KC-Where do you live?  I live in NY and we're expecting bad weather, but I look forward to those days because it's a potential snow day!!!!  I travel 3 hours to my GI & surgeon so many times we go the night before, the hospital have apartment rooms for a cheap rate, you might want to check with you dr or the hospital he/she uses.

Tracy, Hodaya, Rosemary, Butterfly and anyone else I missed, hope you are doing well and staying as healthy as possible.  Hugs and love to all!

hi all i still don't have a computer and it's gonna take at least 2 more weeks :( anyway i'm posting from work, but can't do this much, don't really have time to catch up. wanted to update you all that i've been hospitalized due to partial obsruction, was 2 days in till it was cleared. i feel o.k now but can't really eat solids much. anyway just wanted to update you and i miss you all and thinking of you.

Jen (and all the others who still have constipation issues and have to take miralax on a daily basis to keep things moving)

As far as I have understood you all correctly, you all suffer from horrible rectal pressure when you don't take the miralax.
Well, this means that your biggest problem and cause for the remaining constipation is the rectum/rectal obstruction/dysfunction which acts like a brake for the proximal motility of the small bowel. If you had an ileostomy I am sure your small bowel would be fine. When you still had your colon left the rectal pressure was passed into the colon. Now, after colectomy, this pressure is not compensated by the colon and the ileocecal vlave (which is a barrier between the small intestine and colon and protects the small bowel from the bacteria/waste in the colon) any more, thus affecting directly the small bowel.
The longer you have an ileorectal anastomosis with a rectal dysfunction the bigger the chance is that the impaired small bowel motility will be not reversible any more. Otherwise, it is not the small bowel itself who has motility problems but it is slowed down subesequently to the rectal obstruction. Therefore, impaired small bowel motility is reversible after you get rid of the rectal obstruction. Lizzie may be a very impressive/rare case of this.

Hi everybody. I have an update of sorts - this morning I had x-rays taken (day 5 of Sitz Marker study). The x-rays were given to me to take to my doctor. My appointment isn't until Friday so I have time to study them. Looking at them quickly I counted 4 markers in the ascending colon, 10 in the descending and 4 in the rectal area. Now I know the rest of them are in there somewhere, I just can't find them.

I wish I knew how to interpret this information and what the doctor's plans are for me. I would ask to move my appointment up but the results of the thyroid tests won't be in any sooner. I'm getting antsy! At least I was able to take three Ducolax after the x-ray. Maybe I can get some relief when I get home from work.

I think you are exactly right about my rectal issue at least.  I'm trying to understand what you're saying though....is it bad to continue to use miralax if it works?  I am fully prepared at some point to probably have to have an ilieostomy.  I'm hoping that's not the case, but I know that would most likely be my next step.  The way things are working now (for the most part) if I take miralax 2 x a day, things continue to flow.....not always on my schedule, but at least I don't get that horrible rectal pressure.    Is this a bad thing?

Janiepan, as long as Miralax works for you, you can continue to use it and it does not worsen your health.  Actually, it is great that it works for you.  I tried miralax twice a day (DR.'s recommendation) before ileostomy surgery and it didn't work for me.  Hence, ileostomy surgery.  You may be lucky and never have to worry about an ileostomy if miralax continues to give you relief.  I hope that you're one of the luckier ones..

I wasn't so lucky and am now dealing with my leg bag that isn't producing any waste.  My husband and I continue to flush out my tube with a syringe.  My surgeon said that maybe my small intestine was manipulated too much with all of my testing and told me to use laxatives!  More, again.  I took magnesium citrate all weekend.  I'm still not going on my own, but my stomach is horribly sore.

I am continuing to wait for March 8 and my appointment with Dr. Wexner.  Only 2 weeks from yesterday.  I am hoping that he can do my surgery before June (my year mark).  My husband and I are so ready to be rid of this tube.

I think as long as you can keep things going it is ok to take miralax. I would say taking miralax is even mandatory to reduce the rectal pressure on the small bowel so that the small bowel can work properly when you don't want to head for the ileostomy yet.

Hoddaya,

That's why I would strongly recommend you, Hoddaya, to start with Miralax. Since it is an osmotic laxative it is quite safe compared to the stimulants and you can use it life-long if needed. BUT if you don't do anything to make things constantly moving you are at high risk to damage your small bowel irreversibly. There are only two options: trying to get along with the miralax/osmotic laxative OR getting an ileostomy which is probably the best option for everyone here with CI and severe outlet problems.
The impaction/subileus you experrienced lately should be an alarming signal for you.

MY TUBE IS OUT!!!!

After a very long day of 10 hrs in the car to CC I saw my surgeon who said all looked well even my abscesses are healing well. Then the ET nurses came and checked my tube and had me empty it all out (my pouch) and I did with no problems. They then pulled the tube out which felt funny and I stood there stoma just very small and below hip bpne and they had me cough and bend over and cough and nothing came out so the valve is working and the pouch is continent!!!! They then checked for how much I can hold in pouch at this time, which they said would not be too much, and it was about 90ml. I have to empty for noe every 3 hrs and 4 hrs at night (I could put tube and bag back in, but I would rather never see that contraption again...janie it sounds kinda like yours and I had to flush things that got stuck too). I then cathed myself four timed for practice and inserted water into the end of the cath (its 30 french and just open on bottom for stool to come out or if you have to flush if something is stuck). I have a sore on my stoma and they said it will heal (its from old tube) and I was able to do it all succesfully. It just feels funny, but I did it all night and today and have had no issues. You can manipulate the cath a little and it just comes out into the toilet and then you wipe it off, take cath out, and cover stoma with small bandage ( i need to but smaller ones since my stoma is only 3/4''). I cannot believe this surgery is done and I have not puked, I have no distention...just swelling from surgery still, but I am just four weeks I think this week and only been out of hospital for less than 2 weeks. I still am battling pain, but the fentanyl is helping a lot and i use norco or dilaudid for breakthrough and then valium for spasms. I get full very quickly and its hard to drink as much as I am supposed to! I was 97.5 lbs this am and that was what three of them said yesterday is I need to gain a bit, but I am workng on it and it will come with time. I do not look that bad, but I guess to some i do. I am petite anyways and so I will never be huge, plus they said drastic weight gain is one big cause of valve slippage and more surgery. I hope this is the last. My body cannot take another surgery and after all the complications (I do not even have room to list them on my signature anymore!!!) I just pray this is it!!! I have hope for you that have pelvic floor issues and please ask away or if you want to see pictures send me your numbers and I have a lot on my phone. Its crazy and so far I think I am the only one on here with a k-pouch! I hope I will be one to give you all hope.

Well, I went for my anorectal manometry yesterday. They said it was ok. Low end of good. I was able to push the balloon out. I was less than impressed with the NP that I saw after my test. She said that they can treat me with laxatives and probiotics. HELLO, I have been down this road already. That doc did another sitz marker test and wouldn't you know it, I had diarrhea Tuesday and Wed, so they were all gone. I guess he didn't believe the last one I had that had them all left in my colon. However with that, I had a lot of blood, which is a new thing for me. The NP and doctor figured since all of the markers were gone, I think they believe I am making it up. The NP said "I don't think you need surgery, but if that is what you want to do, go back to Dr. Chang and he will slice you open, because that is what he does". I thought that was less than professional. I waited 1.5 hrs to hear that while it was snowing like crazy outside and I had a 2.5 hr trip back home. I will try the laxatives and probiotics, but ....

Lizzie, glad you are doing better. Butterfly, just another couple of weeks and you will see Dr. Wexner.

I am enjoying a snow day home with my kids. Even my work was delayed, which is a miracle. We got about 20 inches of snow. But the wind is blowing about 30 mph which is making everything worse.

kcshvr, I'm so sorry that your test didn't go all that well.  Sometimes, they're like that.  Maybe you can  take your sitz marker test over.  Your NP sounds very unprofessional.  It's bad enough having to have open surgery, without the rude remarks.  I have been cut open 3 times now from above my belly button to my pubic area, and will be again when I have my ileostomy revision.

Yes, I'm just waiting my time until I can see Dr. Wexner at Cleveland Clinic.  My husband and I are leaving a week from today and do some sightseeing in Ft. Lauderdale, and then my appt. will be on Monday, March 8.  I cannot tell you how nervous and hopeful that I am.  If this doesn't work, I know that I'll be in a world of hurt.  This may be my last chance as far as getting an ileostomy to work.

Lizzie, I am so happy that you got your tube out and your small intestine is working.  I wish you the very best and hope that your recovery goes well.  It is good that you aren't nauseous.  I have been terribly nauseous after every one of my surgeries.  You are a true success story! 

I hope that when my nightmare ends, I can be as happy and healthy again.  My tube is still not producing and I'm terribly worried.  My right side is expanded and crampy.  I'm getting headaches all of the time now, but am trying to do my best and get thru the next week and a half until I can see Dr. Wexner and see what he says.  My husband says that I'll be another medical journal article for Dr. Wexner, because there just aren't patients that have gone thru what I am.

Lizzie, I do want some pictures. What is your email address and I will email you my cell phone number so you can text me the pictures. You sound so much better. I am so happy for you. Does it hurt when you insert the catheter? Does is leak mucous? I am really ready to just have the procedure done so I can heal and move on with my life. I am now home for 1 hour until I have to leave again and I have been trying to have a bm...not much luck, only a teeny tiny bit came out...but this tiny bit does relieve the stomach pain a little bit. I have been suffering horrific gas pains all morning...it is not a fun way to live.

So, now you have to grow your pouch, right? That sounds like it will be awesome after you can wait 8 or more hours to empty. What does it feel like when the pouch gets full? I know you posted before that it was very painful! YIKES, sounds scary! Do you think you will be able to return to work in 4 weeks? I know the BCIR center told me 8 to 12 weeks off of work! I really hope it is 8 weeks because I want to return to work in August...do you feel like you will be normal again?

Kcshvr, so sorry about the diarrhea in the middle of the sitz marker test. UGH

Hi all,

So far so good, but having to work at staying hydrated without use of my colon in this hot equator climate on side trips.  Rio was a blast!!!  Salvadore Brazil must have been 100 and it was VERY humid.  Water, water, water.  Still dancing.  Learned Argentine tango and some brazilian dance.  These natives really know how to live.  I wonder if they have all this gut stuff.  I bet not.  Best to you all.  Hope Lizzie and Jen continue to improve.  Love, Rosemary

Lizzie-Our prayers have finally been answered!  You are such a miracle from God; I have prayed every day and continue to pray for you.  I'm so happy that your body is healing and you are gaining strength and some weight.   You are such an inspiration to everyone to keep fighting. Butterfly-Praying that you can have your surgery.  I had two leg bags for my urine for just eight weeks and it was such a pain, the first one leaked all the time.  I don't know how you do it; you are a very strong woman!

Please say a prayer for Logan (former student) I think I have told you about him before, he has a shunt.  He had 28 surgeries by the time he was in my first grade class, he is now 14 and had to have another shunt on Thursday but has had a seizure, vomiting and severe headaches since.  He's always been my hero; he shouldn't be alive but is very smart, funny and the most remarkable guy you would ever meet.  God has a very special plan for him!

I hope everyone is feeling well or as well as can be expected. I always pray for you all and hope that you can feel healthy.

I'm enjoying my 2 snow days!!!!! We've never had 2 in a row so this is truly a gift:)

Lizzie,

What did they find that caused all of your vomiting when they made your k-pouch?  We all need to know as that is the unanswered question.

I AM SOOOOOO HAPPY FOR YOU and I pray for you that you fully recover and do well with the k-pouch forever.  Don't worry about how much weight to gain, just do what you can.  With a normal ileostomy stoma one is also not supposed to overdo on weight gain.  Hey to the rest of the world we look like models?  right?

Hi girls, I hope everyone is surviving all the snow we are getting across the country. Idaho is actually not getting all that much. Storms seem to hit us but not stay very long. Its just very cold up here.

I am starting to get so discouraged with my belly. It just is not happy. If I do not take miralax I do not go. I wonder if I am just worrying about it too much. Like an obsession. I have considered to stop taking the miralax for a few days and just see what happens, but kinda scared to do that. I am so careful what I eat, but things just dont seem to be flowing like they used to. Janie, you said you take it twice a day? Do you think I should do that? I really do not want to end up with further surgery. I am just at my wits end.

Rosemary, how much longer do you have on your trip? Sounds like you are having a wonderful time. Dance away!!

Judy, great to hear from you. Sounds like you have your hands full with your kids. I always thought once they grew up and were in college you were home free!! I guess that is my wishful thinking, hu?

Welcome all the new people, it seems like there are more and more people like us. And probably so many more like us that are out there lost. Who ever thought that such a simple thing as going poop would have to be so complicated!!
