Hi everyone,

Quick question...Oscar and I have our first plane ride (as an ostomate)  on Friday. Is there anything I should know or do? Again, im ALWAYS "randonly selected" (maybe my ginormous sleeve tattoo freaks them out??) and am ok with that...but just want to know what I should say/do and bring with me (what CAN you bring onto a plane nowadays?? LOL)?

As far as I know we are still limited to carrying a 1QT. bag of carry-on health and beauty items. To verify check the TSAs website at www.tsa.gov It will tell you exactly what is permitted in carry on and what must be checked. I can't comment on the security check information but I am sure some ostomates will chime in.

When you are 'randomly' picked you just have to let them know you have medical supplies for your ostomy. I haven't ever been questioned about any supplies or my medical condition so I don't know what they'd want from that stand point...but I would gladly show whoever wanted to look scool

Your supplies are separate from the 1Qt rule and like suebear said go to the tsa website to get a better idea. Just don't put them only in your checked in luggage or have some in both carry on and checked in. Always bring a little extra for those 'just in case' moments but most importantly....have FUN!

Oh, if you cut your wafers, you'll have to do that before you leave so you don't have to mess with scissors.

You probably don't want me to sing, Im the person who when she sings in the shower, the water parts ala red sea to get away from me. LOL. I can't carry a tune to save my life, though that dosen't stop me from singing my fool head off whenever I can! LOL.

I had never really considered flying and all that would go into packing the emergency kit for the flight.  So, that go me thinking...(don't worry, didn't hurt myself!)...I use the wafer that I have to cut myself, and would probably not be able to take the scissors with me on board.  So, I would probably need to pre-cut each accessory I brought with me.  I don't know what your accessory is like, but this was my thought.  smilewinkgrin

I hope you have fun on your trip!

When I flew to Florida I had everything cut and ready to use if I needed them in the carry on bag. I had several changes in case my baggage would happen to be lost.

Someone had told me my ostomy bag would fill with air during take off. It did not and I got along great. I just made sure it was empty before getting on the plane.

I fly all the time and it's never a problem. In the past month I've been to Montreal 3x, also Manhatten, Houston, and Ft Myers FL. I have a couple precut flanges and bags I pocket, the rest I check. I always buy a bottle of water to help rinse out if I need to empty the bag during the flight. Sometimes I get the pat down, usually not. If I do I tell them I have an ostomy and honestly they don't care whatsoever...90% of the time I don't think they even know what I'm talking about lol

We are back from the week-end from H-E-double hockey sticks. Oscar did WONDERFUL and of course, for the first time ever, I was not "randomly selected." *pout* I did as was told and put some extra supplies in a baggie into my purse. I even sat in a window seat for the first time in 13 years!! Of course I ended up having to go to the washroom, but that was due to too many bottles of water. Thanks to everyone for your words of wisdom!!!...and now here is some of mine: Never EVER EVER fly Air Canada. EVER.
