I keep seeing people talk about Mayo Clinic and other places in the north, but uh I live in the south. Is there any surgeons in the Atlanta area that are good? I know that I'm eventually going to have surgery (possibly in the next year if Remicade doesn't work) and was just wondering if the reason everyone mentions Mayo Clinic is because it is the best place to go or is it just because it is in the north and lots of people go there?

You should be able to find a qualified surgeon in Atlanta. I recommend you ask this question in the general discussion board at www.j-pouch.org

Yea. That website scares me sometimes, though, reading about all the issues with j-pouches :<
I think I read one of your posts about the pouchitis board and to stay away from there...I had wished I had known about that, oh, 3 months ago when my GI told me to start thinking about surgery if medication doesn't work. lol

Don't be scared! Like all support sites, you see lots more people who are having problems and less of those who are living a full life! Over 90% of people who have had jpouch surgery are satisfied. All you need to do is ask your question and not other posts. However, that being said, you might want to read up on what your surgery and recovery will be like so you won't be surprised or disappointed. Honestly, you should do just fine!!

Yea I was watching a few videos of UCVlog on youtube and he talks about the j pouch surgery. One of the things he talked about was how many times you go to the bathroom a day and that you are able to hold it in if needed without any pain.
At that point I was heavily confused because 8 months into a flare up I forgot what "holding it in meant" other than "oh god get to the nearest bathroom asap before it goes down my leg" LOL

NewShinycd, Atlanta should have some good doctors with one of the Emory hospitals.  I think that the best colorectal surgeons are at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and Weston, Florida.  I'm in Florida and my colorectal surgeon at Cleveland Clinic is Dr. Wexner.  He is one of the top colorectal surgeons in the world and can perform surgeries in many countries.  I have a very difficult re-operative surgery coming up in July and I trust Dr. Wexner totally.

I see Dr. Jay Singh out of Piedmont Hospital. He came highly recommended and all of the nurses said he is GREAT! He is a colorectal surgeon...

Is Dr. Wexner the one who wrote you the pessimistic letter? If so, I would take note. He is one of the leading intestinal surgeons in the world.

I also see Dr. Jay Singh at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta after references from both my GI in GA and a GI physician at Vanderbilt Univ.  He's an experienced surgeon and takes a lot of time to explain your surgery in detailed terms that you can understand.  He even called me back personally at my home when I called with more questions.  He's with the Piedmont Colorectal Group.  After I came home from the hospital, my visiting home healthcare nurse complimented the "beautiful" ileostomy I had!  Compared it to a rose - LOL!

My original surgeon (rectal cancer surgery, temp ostomy, reversal, etc.) now lives in the Atlanta area, Marietta to be specific (he used to practice in the Cincinnati area). My GI doc sings my surgeon's praises everytime I have a flex-sig, colonoscopy, saying what an excellent job my surgeon did.

His name is Matthew Novak.

I'm in Atlanta and was so lucky to have Dr Joseph Nichols at Piedmont Colorectal Associates. He is amazing and when he was off, his associates were great too. Great work- I have had other doctors comment on how great my scar looks. :) If you want to know more about him, feel free to email me.

Hilarious- Dr Nichols works with Dr Singh! I saw Dr Singh in the hospital! They are a great bunch!!
