Hi everyone. I am in the process of finding out if I have CI. I am on day 3 going on to the 4th day of my sitz test and I had a MRI of my abdomen last week. I was wondering if anyone has been experiencing leg swelling. I don't know if there is any relation to my stomach issues and being so constipated. I have not had a bm since last week and so all of the markers are still somewhere in my gi tract where I don't know. I go on wed to have my X-ray to see where the 24 markers are. I am very miserable, my stomach is distended and some pain. After you have the sitz marker test and it is decided that it is CI what is the next step usually? Do you go see a colon/rectal surgeon or do they do more tests? I have read that sometimes you have to have a pelvic floor dysfunction test. 3 years ago I had pelvic reconstruction due to my daughter weighed 11 pounds at birth 20 years ago and i had a natural birth and I mean natural no pain meds no epidural. I have also had a appendectomy 2 years ago, hystorectomy 1993 and my gallbladder removed 1997. After my gallbladder was removed that is when my problems with constipation started and it has been a very long road to get to where I am today by finding a GI doctor who will listen to me and not keep ordering the same test over and over again. I have had 8 ct scans, 2 colonoscopies and 2 endoscopies and multiple meds that never helped. Dianna, I was officially dx with colonic inertia a few years back....this was after always being told I had IBS-C. I have ALWAYS been constipated! But, the constipation was manageable and my life was fairly normal other than infrequent bm's.....it was after I had a hysterectomy and pelvic prolapse repairs in 2005 that the word constipation took on a whole new meaning. I then had another pelvic prolapse repair, a sacralcolopopexy because the doctor said this surgery would "help" with the outlet issue. Well, he was dead wrong and it only intensified my problem.

I am now totally laxative dependent and have to use a "billion" suppositories every week. My entire life revolves around trying to poop. I have to use bathroom acrobats to have a bm and this takes many hours of my day every single day.


I also had big babies, the biggest topped the scales at 10lbs 13oz!

Have you tried miralax? Do you have an outlet problem too? Have you had a defecogram, anal manometry, emg, etc? I know you need these tests to determine if you have a pelvic floor dysfunction. I also had a normal colonoscopy and ct scans.

Welcome. Come join us at total colectomy part 33. This is where many of us meet with colonic inertia. There is no cure for colonic inertia and most doctors will recommend a total colectomy which is removing the slow colon.

Hey thanks for responding. I'm glad that I am not the only one who has this problem. I have tried gallons of miralax and lactolose no help at all. So I am waiting until tomorrow for my xray for day 5 of the sitz marker test. I'll be glad when it is over becacuse my stomach is really distended and as soon as I can I will be taking my hand full of laxitives. My problem seems to begetting through the colon because after that it seems to come out fine through my intestines and rectum. I will try and join the total colectomy part 33. Thanks.

Dianna, that is great news....atleast you have a working rectum. A total colectomy should work wonderfully for you then. And no, you are not alone.

Diannayeah   Once the Sitz Marker tests come back then you will know more.  If it is your colon not working properly for me I found my own just regular surgeon who does all sorts of surgeries.  He listened to me and I told him my whole story of how I have been suffering for years so it had been 3 months since I had the other sitz done that he had me do one more.  Yup, it came back the same, so that Friday he got rid of my colon...so happy now.

If your severly constipated it can make your ankles and legs swell.  Hope you feel better.

Hey Leslie, I had my xray today and I will not know anything until next week. I heard the xray tech tell the other tech that the rings were stiil in there but I don't know where, and then she told me that she had to take them to the radiologist now, so I don't know if that means anything but I will see my GI doctor next wed.

Hey Leslie, Just checking on you. How are you feeling. I finally stopped being bloated and was able to have a bm after 10 laxitives since my sitz marker test. I weighed myself before the bm and I was 134 after the bm 124. Thats 10 pounds. I also ate something different on wed morning that was a beef and potatoe in a deep fried wrap that on thursday night I vomitted up.I know I definately have something wrong. My fear is that the GI doctor will say lets do more test or maybe just wait and see but I won't . I will keep seeing more and more doctors if needed. Anyway I just wanted to hear from you. You have been such an inspiration for me . God bless you.

Dianna,, Hi hun, I am doing pretty good ..kind of freaked out for 2 days as I didn't harld go at all.  So I just get scared but it all worked out, and good now.  Had one of my passing out spells last night.  They dont know what is causing my black outs but I had to go poo last night and I was walking fast down the hall and got right before the bathroom and I got that feeling...you know that one right before you pass out so I was trying to put myself on the floor and I was all disorientated and felt like my knees were buckeling and I remember trying to lift my foot and down I went passed right out.

The not so funny part is in those few min when I was standing there and could not do anything my bowels went all over the floor and my night gown the bathroom.  Yikes what a mess.

But at least I can go back to my neuro surgeon and he will do more tests, he was waiting for me to black out again for doing a ct or a MRI...this has happen 20 times in the last year , once I broke my leg in 3 places when I blacked out...so not fun.  He said he has never seen a brain scan like mine, its not functioning right in the left frontal lobe...so my memory is affected...

Hope they help you girl my gosh....10 lbs that a load of poo what a relief hugh?  I know that all to well.  Hopefully the test will tell them what you need...

Leslie, You poor thing. I hope they figure out what is going on. It's not good to keep passing out like that. Do you have someone that can stay with you to help watch over you. I hate to think of things that could happen to yourolleyes  A few years ago I keep having vertigo that happened everyday no matter if I was sitting,standing or sleeping. I couldn't drive or hardly walk without getting dizzy. I saw several neurologist and I was put in the hopital for a anyrsum but, luckly it wasn't. I was dx with menheirs disease which is extra fluid in my right ear that would cause a dizzy spell. The doctors think it was from my abusive ex-husband who had bounced my head off the floor when he was drunk as I said ex-husband. I have a wonderful husband now. So now I am on a water pill daily and take allegra and so far no vertigo for several years. So I really hope thay find out what is going on. I will prey for you but I am so worried about you. Please keep in touch with me and let me know how you are doing.

Dianna, wow glad you said x. Its not a daily passing out thing so no dont have no one to stay. I am calling my neurologist tomorrow so he can order the tests I need...Happy Easter...to you cooking some breakfast right at the moment...yummm..sorry.
