Hi Everyone! I just wanted to give a update. I will be having my total colectomy on june 10 finally. I am so ready but I am also nervous also. i am hoping that everything will go well. I will have my preop on june 7  and I know that I will have lots of questions. If anyone has any question I should ask please let me know. I went on line and watched a video on a total abdominal colectomy it was really cool.

summerstorm, here are several questions I have:+

1. How much pain did you have right after surgery?

2. What type of pain control did you have?

3. Any weight loss or gain?

4. what type of diet normal or low residue diet and for how long?

Julsgirl,

          It was really interesting to watch the video on my upcoming surgery it showed how they reconnect the small intestine into the rectum. I can handle watching the video because I am a nurse and I stand in for skin cancer surgeries. You can go to utube and get any video on any surgeries.

1. Its odd, its like you wake up knowing that the disease is gone,and you feel better from that, but
the surgery pain HURTS!!! I'm not gonna lie to you and tell you it doesn't,lol. But its worth it and
it wont last long

2. When i first came out they were just giving me shots of morphine to get it under control,
morphine is your friend :D after that i had an epidural of pain meds, for about two days
then got the pain meds either by mouth or by a shot in my pic line. Its good stuff, it works
The worse pain after the first day was from gas! so take some gas-x with you!

3. I lost weight at first, from being so sick and of course you don't eat much the first few days.
Then after i got home i put some of it back on, and then i realized i could eat all this stuff, so i
put even more of it on! But that was my own fault.

4. The first six weeks you are on a low residue diet, after that its a normal diet, just introduce
things that may cause trouble slowly. And wait a while to eat things like popcorn or nuts. It
takes a while for your body to get used to the new workings!

Dianna   Great for you hun...dont be scared or nervous you will be just fine.  When they did my total colectomy there was no prep, cuz mine was not working and it had been 25 days without movement, and during that time I drank 4 bottles of Citris Mag, Gallon of go lightly, and a bottle of Mirilax....so what ever is in there they just take it with them when they remove all the stuff.  Are you getting hooked back up like me or getting a appliance...We are all praying for you to have a safe surgery and to heal properly without any complications, and return to a healthy life...

Hey Leslie, Thank you for the kind words. I will be hooked back up so no bag. I will be havin it done abdominally not laprosopy. I know that I will be much better off once I get through all the surgery stuff.

Dianna, then you will be just like me, probably have a internal J-Pouch for a colon. So if you need to anything through this process I am here for you. Feeling great is so nice I can't wait for you to get the surgery and regain your life..

Dianna  Well just 5 more days till you new life, I am so excited for you.  Just wanted to let you know that your in my prayers along with all the others who are suffering.  I have been doing well except I have had what I  think is the flu for 5 day....thats sucks....but if I cant keep anything down today going to the ER and get some IV fluids as I get too dehydrated too quick and that is something that you will have to pay close attention to also Dianna...

Hi Leslie, I hope that you are feeling better. Hopefully you got some fluids. I am ready to get this show on the road. Had my preop today, that went well. I am very happy with my surgeon, he has done so many colectomies in the last few months, so I am not worried. The only thing is my prep I will be stating tomorrow and wed., Plus the 3 hibaclense showers I have to take. But I am almost packed so is my husband he will be in the hospital with me and my parents came down from virginia to be with me. I will keep you updated I think I am bringing my laptop to the hospital so I will try to let you know how I am. Thanks for all of your support and love. I will talk to you later sweetie.

Dianna, what prep do they have you using? My doctor has me using moviprep. YUCK

Also, why do you have to take 3 hibacleanse showers? I haven't heard of that and my pre-op instructions don't say anything about me doing that.

Dianna  Wow, I did not have to do any prep,,  so I would not worry too much about it.  Because when they take your whole colon they also take whatever is in it ....trust me it had been 25 day and no bowel movement , and right in to surgery....  so they said it was ready to burst, the cells were breaking down and it no longer worked at all.

I know that you probably worried about the surgery or apprehensive.  But sweetie I have had so many surgeries, more than what they would let me put on here.  What I am trying to get at is  your not going to be in pain in the hospital, they will keep you plenty high, just keep pushing that pump....Plus make sure they dont send you home with just Percocets, ask for some Diluoid...unless pain meds really work on you.  For me I am on a pain regimen for years for my back ....but I dont really take very much...  but the perks...made me nausious, so make sure that you get some good nausia meds also to go home with... bless your heart.. your going to be just fine..

Tracy, My prep is miralx a large bottle mixed with 64 oz of gatorade I drink 8 oz every 15 min until gone, then i take the 2 showers and a fleet enema that is tomorrow then on thursday my surgery day I take another shower at 4 am and another fleet enema before I leave for the hospital. I have to be at the hospital at 6am surgery at 8am them my surgeons says that my surgery may last 5-7 hours because I have a lot of scar tissue and then he may put me in ICU for the first day. Good Luck on your upcoming surery, When is it?

Dianna, how much miralax? Is it the 510 gram bottle? Do you have to take dulcolax too? Just asking because if I can't stomach the moviprep, I will change over to miralax. I always have lots and lots of miralax on hand.

I have my colonoscopy scheduled for June 15th, then my actual surgery June 21st. I am not having my entire colon removed though. I will have a temporary ileostomy after mine.

Do you have to take potassium pills with your prep? Because I do and I have never heard of this either.

I plan to go on an early liquid diet, maybe 2 days prior to my prep. I am not easy to clean out, even with heavy duty laxatives.

tomorrow you are going to start your new life, scooby! Best wishes to you, and I know it will all work out. stay positive, and I am sure you are a little nervous but before you know it you will be sitting in your hospital bed feeling a million times better minus the usual aches and stuff from surgery, but man, I remember when I went for mine it was instantly noticeable that I was a whole new person. Stay in touch and ask all the questions you have left.

Dianna,  Well its tomorrow for you...  Your going to love your new life and so excited for you.  Yes, do ask me anything at anytime after you surgery.  Try to remain calm, and just know that you will be fine.  Where is your surgery?

Dianna,  they did not have me get up for 3 days, don't know why, guess I was too out of it...so excited for you.  I feel like it is me all over again, I am so excited for you.  Just to know that your going to be better makes my heart happy...Good Luck even though you won't need it...Prayersssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss for you.

Hey Tracy, My Prep is not going to well I have been on a clear liquid diet for 2 days and started at 2:00 today with 4 laxitives and at 4:00 it was a large bottle of miralax and 64 oz of gatarade I am having very little movement my stomach is very swollen and I have already took 1 hibaclense shower . I need to do another shower at mdnight and again at 4 am also need to do a fleet enema in am after shower then it is of to the hospital. I will keep in touch.

Dianna, surely you will start pooping soon. You probably need to walk around ALOT! This will sometimes get the intestines to start producing. What pills did you have to take? Was it dulcolax?

Dianna,  OMG I have never herd of that kind of a prep thing.  Don't worry honey what does not come out will come out with you innerds....just like they did me.  As for all of the showering ???  I did not have to do any of it.  So kick back and relax and get ready for you big send off to  SAY IT WITH ME      A NEW LIFE
