    I just cant believe how the hospital here (vancouver, canada) shipped me in and out soo quick!  I had my colon removed on Friday and Im sitting here at home on Wednesday? I got an ileostomy and I DO NOT NEED TO RUN TO THE WASHROOM RIGHT NOW! lol  "god that felt good"

       I got the laprascopic surgery done by the best surgeon here so Im counting my blessings. The physiotherapist was in my room on saturday making me get out of bed and trying to walk around which I knew was coming after reading alot of posts on here. I had sooo much morphine it didnt matter anyway.

   I came home with my new accessories "and and and" a catheter to pee?  I guess the swelling has confused my bladder and its not working properly.  I got to admit I didnt see that coming? Im terrified that my bladder has been damaged permanently!!!Draining it twice a day along with cleaning the staples in my belly and constantly changing my bag. (still watery after surgery)  I personally think Id be better off in the hospital for a few more days to monitor things BUT nope...ship me in and out a.s.a.p.

    Just thought Id share my experience and wonder if anyone else had had the bladder problem?  Its freaking me out..that I had my colon removed just to wreck my bladder.        Thanks in advance for any answers.     Celine

It's going to be okay! ((BIG HUG)) The internal swelling is temporary and will go down, and you will be able to pee on your own again. It just takes a little while sometimes.

After they took my catheter out, I would just sit on the potty and wait while it barely trickled out. It was like that for the first couple of weeks, but improved as the swelling went down. Once that happened, the flow slowly increased, and it kept improving until it was finally normal again. I was worried that I would not be able to pee normally, too, and my surgeon did not prepare me for that, so I know what you're going through.

Do you have a home health nurse coming to check on you? Did they say when they might take the catheter out, so you can try to pee on your own?

Isn't it nice to not have to RUN to the washroom anymore? You'll really appreciate that once you're feeling better and are out shopping for food or clothes. It's wonderful to not have to know where every public washroom is in town!

Hang in there. Everything is going to be just fine. You had major surgery and was sent home very quickly. Keep in touch with your surgeon and ask for a home health nurse, if they haven't already arranged for one to come to you. Keep us posted on how you're doing, and make sure you're drinking plenty of water, so you don't get dehydrated.

thnk u soo much for ur response flchurchlady. I really have been giving my self anxiety attacks worrying about it. I am happy to be disease free andd medicine free too...yahoooooo! Have a great life. Thanks again. Celine

Hey smurfy!! glad you are well and don't worry about the catheter, like churchlady said, it will work out. The hospital I was at actually wouldn't let me out until I was able to pee on my own. I actually told them if I could take the catheter home, but they just looked at me like I was nuts or something. I guess everyone does it differently. Get plenty of rest and you know you have all of us here to answer you questions.

I had trouble peeing after every surgery. I didn't have to stay catheterized (I cannot stand them. They don't work well for me and they are painful to me constantly so I demand they be taken out the day after surgery), but I did have to sit on the toilet a while and move positions a lot to get the pee out. If I leaned forward, I could usually start going.

I had my surgery Thurs, and was out Monday...I had the same surgery you did. I also had trouble peeing after they removed the catheter, similar to Cecilia. I had surgery about 2.5 months ago and my peeing is still sketchy but I've had 2 surgeries on my bladder and am currently seeing a urologist so I don't know if I'm a good reference point.

Glad your surgery went well--you have many great days ahead of you! Just rest up--you'll be great!

got mine out at the hospital after 4 days but here's the funny part- (ps I am 53) when I was peeing there was blood- my first thought was "crap! this thing has given me a bladder infection" so I demanded they take a sample and send it to the lab- (completely forgetting I was on intravenous antibiotics- the nurse apparently did too) by the time it came back I had already figured out- surgery made me have a period! It had been 6 months or so (I had 3 last year) so I wasn't expecting that- felt really stupid afterward but me and the head floor nurse had a good laugh! (ouch! incision!)

Well its day 7 since my surgery and Im starting to pee on my own. It seems to work if I wait till my bladder is full? I did get antibiotics from the doctor, and I am slowly starting to feel better about it. I though Id hate having the bag at first and would have to get used to the odour, the comfort, the clothes, BUT It had been good so far. Next to no odour, and Im a jogging pants kinda gal anyways..lol Thanks again for all the feedback. It really helped ease my mind. Wish U all great lives. Celine

So glad you're peeing on your own! :-) Hollister M9 drops are great at controlling odor or you can put a capful of hydrogen peroxide (the kind they sell at the grocery store) in the pouch.

I had surgery on a Monday and went home the following Sunday so it's not unusual. They took the catheter out about 3 hours before they discharged me and I had a 2 hour trip home - THAT was a miserable car ride I can tell ya. I almost wished they'd left the catheter in for a few days.

  I think my bladder is 90% back to normal now.  Its been almost 2 weeks. The doctor gave me a choice of doing the disposable catheter or the bag..and I chose the disposable one. Twice a day I had to use it to empty my bladder rather than the catheter in 24/7. I just didnt want 2 bags! I am loving the ostomy! I took my niece to her school field trip today and it felt sooo great to be a part of that. freeeeedddooommmm!!!!! hehehehe

Hi! I'm new on this site. I had surgery about 6 weeks ago. My previous j-pouch failed and the surgeon thought he could go in and repair it but that didn’t happen. The good news (maybe) is that I did have enough small intestines to create a new j-pouch. Now I’m scheduled for a couple of test in July and if all is well then hopefully a reversal. The last six weeks has had its ups and downs, the mental aspect of having the ostomy and finding the proper supplies to fit my needs but I’ve been able to EAT whatever I want with no complications. It has been years of since I’ve been able to enjoy food without worrying how it was going to affect me!! Problem now is I’m worried about going through the reversal and it failing all over again and I’m back at square one!!
