Had my proctocolectomy surgery on Friday the 11th!

I feel so much better. The weeks leading up to the surgery I was in so much pain and was so weak and couldn't even eat anything. I thought I would be depressed and in a lot of pain when I got out. I really don't even feel the affects from the surgery that much. The only pain I really have is from the catheter and the gauze that they packed in my rear. Its making it hard to move around. They put me on a water diet yesterday and since I was doing well on it I got upgraded to a full clear liquid diet. Hopefully I can eat FOOD soon. Its weird cause I feel kinda tired but I have been staying up like 5am-11pm. Normally I would just want to sleep. Oh and another exciting thing is they are bringing the prednisone down really fast. I've been on 60mg since october and hopefully I will be on 10-15 later in the week when I get out.
Anyway I just thought I would post an update. Without the help and support of you guys and my family and friends I really don't know what would have happened. Thank you all,

YAY!!! You are healthy now, isnt it great???
One thing i will caution you about, when i got out i was on like 15 mg of steroids too and it was gonna be like 3 weeks until i was off completly, and i decided i was tired of them and stopped taking them, and that was a mistake, the withdrawal sucked, lol.
Other than that, have fun with your new life now!

This is great news! Be prepared for some ups and downs though. Just remember that if there is a "down" day that an "up" one is just around the corner. Remember to get up and WALK and CHEW your food really well.

With every week you will find that you are stronger and stronger and healthier and healthier.

Thats the way I felt on the days after my surgery as well. :) Just know that it's going to get EVEN BETTER!!!! Go slowly on the eating at first, chew a lot and definitely try to walk around as much as possible--it helps pain and helps your digestion. You'll be out of there soon and able to live your LIFE! :)

wow congrats Brian!! im a bout to have the same surgery in 2 weeks and i hope i do as well as u r so far.
80schick i jst saw that u also have had a proctocolectomy..how was ur surgery/recovery?

Just an updateim STILL here in the hospital unfortunately. After they advanced me to a food diet I ate a half of a ham and cheese sandwhich and had a blockage later that night. I thew up and ever since then I am on a nothing by mouth diet. Not even water :(
they also put a catheter in my stoma cause they think it might be inflamed. It keeps falling out though. I am just hoping I get out of here soon because I have so much pain in my back from the hospital bed and they are drawing blood, poking me every few hours.
Anyone else have these problems after surgery?

I definatley had the back pain too. I think it was partly fom the bed and the fact that I couldn't stand up perfectly straight. I was a little hunched forwrd for a while because if i tried to straighten up my incisions would stretch. The pain meds they gave me helped with that though (tylenol w/ codiene). Once they get you stable and your able to go home I think your progress will thrive. When I got home and was comfortable again my appetite came back full force! I gained back all the weight I lost (25lbs) in a little over a month! Sounds crazy, i know. Just stay positive and you'll feel better in no time!

Brian84~sorry to hear you had a set back. They can happen with major surgery:( Ileus is common and it's where your intestine goes back to sleep after waking up (pain/vomiting and no output)...did they do a CT Scan and find a blockage?

Back pain comes with the surgery...there was a lot of activity in your abdomen and that affects your back, too:( A heating pad works well to help with back discomfort. That way you don't have to over do pain meds for that pain. Just remember~do not put a heating pad on your incision!

You will walk a little hunched over for a while. As thing heal it will get easier and before you know it you'll be able to stand straight again:)

It is best to be in the hospital with complications...I hope they have gotten things straightened out now! Keep us posted!

Brian I am currently still in the hospital too after a total proctocolectomy and its been over 2 weeks. Im having the whole illeus issue but slowly my intestine is waking up. Don't force yourself to eat just take it slow, heck for lunch I had a spoonful of soup and was full or bloated. Plus the narcotics you are on slows things down but we need pain control too. I feel for you and wish you the best.
