Rectum removal--How soon to go out to eat at a restaurant comfortably

My husband is two weeks post rectum removal/anus closing surgery. He is making slow progress. What he wants to know is how long was it before any of you went out to eat at a restaurant where you sat down for the dinner. He's having difficulty sitting in a chair for meals at home. He's been eating standing up. Many of his friends have called and asked him to meet them for lunch when he is up to it. He's wondering how long that might be. What is your experience?

The surgeon who removed my rectum and sewn up my anus must have done a spectacular job. I could sit up the next day after my surgery without any problem at my bottom. I ate my clear food breakfast at 8am that day, sitting on my bed.
My bottom did feel funny. Gas passed out of it very 'gently' and intermittently for a few days. But it didn't hurt when I sat down.
I was discharged 10 days post surgery. On the following day my husband took me out for lunch. He was tired of having cooked for 3 weeks during which I was hospitalized.

BTW, the surgeon who operated on my rectum is a lady. Maybe she is good at sewing. There was another surgeon who did the 'main' part---removing my colon and created the stoma. He also did a good job. I got a nice stoma, perfectly round in shape.

I agree with Ohio76, you need to give your husband's recovery much more time! We all heal differently. Some of us had very bad pain that took weeks to subside; others had no pain from the get-go. You both need to come to terms with the complexity and trauma of the surgery. This surgery is a huge shock to the system and although you probably think he should be better due to no longer having the disease there is a recovery period. Recovery should be measured in 6 week increments. You should see minor improvement every 6 weeeks in the next several months. This covers everything from pain reduction to fatigue, and transit time of food.

I was in the hospital for 9 days, 4 days after leaving I went to a Christmas pub party. Healing time is different for everyone! Give it time.

My rectum and colon were both removed. I consider myself extremely fortunate as I had no pain post op nor do I have pain now. Fatigue is my main problem but that is to be expected. I spent eleven days in the hospital due to a few complications. Not having any problems with eating, just staying away from high fiber foods and remembering to chew, chew chew!
