Can a person with a colostomy get a temporary ileosomy?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there knows the answer to this question,  I have a permenate colostomy right now and am in full blown crohn's in the rest of the large bowel.  Is it all posible to have a temporary ileostomy in order to give my large bowel time to heal and save the rest of it?

I think someone here was mentioning that her son was doing the same thing. Though, many have also stated that even with this temp ileo their large intestine was still suffering the wrath from the disease. I know it is not something you want to hear, but I suggest you thoroughly talk to your surgeon(s) about it and just make sure you are going to make a very informative decision about it.

Yes...they will divert the colon and you will have two pouches. If you don't mind, why do you want to keep the colon if it is so diseased?

I am afraid of the Disease going into my perfectly healthy small bowel and then we start all over again. I am just trying to see if it is at all posible to keep the colon.

Hopefully flchurchlady will be along...she only had disease in her colon and had a proctocolectomy w/end ileo...there are others on here that have done that too!

For me, I had both small and large involvement...small first and then it was active in my large when I had my proctocolectomy...the percentage gets smaller every year, and 10 years is the major mark, that the disease won't come back in the small(knock on wood!!!).

Maybe you could check out some of the studies and see what the percentages are for small bowel involvement after colon removal.

What does your doc recommend? Have you gotten a second opinion?

Off to see the GI again on Friday and will discuss many of the options and then I am on the way to meet with my surgeon on Aug.5th. My surgeon is very much for anyother treatment first before surgery--so I am sure he'll have many suggestions--he is not a cut happy surgeon. My Gi is one of the best for crohn's in my area but he is getting ready to retire so you have to stay on top of him.
