  HELLO, I DO NOT KNOW YOU?  WHAT KIND OF SURGERY DID YOU HAVE ?  I HAD A TOTAL COLECTOMY FEB 19 OF THIS YEAR AND I HAVE A INTERNAL J POUCH, IS THAT WHAT YOUR REFERRING TOO...THEY HOOKED ME BACK UP SO NO APPLIANCES..

IF YOUR THE SAME LET ME KNOW WOULD BE GLAD TO GIVE YOU ANY INFO YOU NEED...LESLIE

My 19 year old son has a wonderfully functioning J pouch that is 7 months old. The removal of his colon has given him his life back from UC. Yes, he visits the bathroom more often than the rest of us but he is in every way healthy. It has been a blessing.

Hi Collicat and others,

I am a 24 year old who had UC. I had a sub total colectomy a year and half ago. I am now considering the J-pouch or making this permanent. I am worried about the unknown lifestyle of the J-pouch. How often do you go? How much control do you have? etc if you have any insight on the ostomy vs J pouch please post. Thanks

as said above, the site jpouch.org is probably the best place for it. It is probably a personal preference if you are able to have a j-pouch over an ostomy. I currently have a functioning j-pouch and I am extremely happy with it. I have been going to the bathroom anywhere from 4-8 times a day with no urgency, cramps, or pain. The gas is atrocious, but you have to be careful what you eat. I had an ostomy, and that was the beginning of what gave me my life back. You get used to it very quickly, and you live a functioning life. Everyone is different. By no means, take what I have said as gold, it is just something to base some of your queries on. It will be an adjustment, but know that you can always go back to an ostomy if you don't like the way things work.
