Can I really eat whatever I want to.  My doctor told me I could eat anything I wanted to after my ileostomy. My ostomy nurse told me to be careful of nuts, corn, popcorn, anything that will not digest.  I don't eat so many things because i am afraid to.  I have had some really odd things come thru my stoma. Like a chunk of onion, a intact pea, but still I worry.  I don't want to cause a blockage.  From what I have read that can't be fun.

if you are more than six weeks post surgery you can eat pretty much anything you want. Start slowly, like dont eat a whole bag of popcorn at one time to start out with,until you see if it is gonna cause problems. i usually eat a bag of popcorn for lunch though. But drink lots of water. I have eaten nuts a few times, with no problems, but i dont like just plain corn so i don't know about that.
The only thing at all that gives me trouble is fried mozeralla cheese sticks. Everytime i eat a few of them i get blocked up for a while.
Just chew everything really really really well, and drink lots and lots and lots of water.

We all have different experiences, different anatomy, and different original issues which necessitated the ileostomy. I have had stomal blockages on only mashed potato even though I drink tons of water. Luckily I was able to melt this down with tons of hot tea, grape juice, and lots of walking. The potato came out all at once and just filled the bag. But it was a pretty misearable 10 hours of bloat and pain. I was in the middle of the ocean on a world cruise when this happened so I'm REALLY lucky I resolved it myself. I was told no nuts, no seeds, no peels, I've also added heavy starchy foods like potato and winter squash to my NO list. I eat lightly like scrambled eggs, very well chewed chicken or even baby food chicken, beef, lamb, (10 grams of protein in 1 little jar, not bad), well cooked zucchini minus the seeds, pancakes, blended fruits and veggies. basically if I can't chew it to mush I don't swallow it. Some people on here have gotten blockages from eating lots of pasta, again a starchy food. The code is chew well, lots of water, eat bland, and if you do adventure just try small amounts of new foods. Personally I stay clear of roughage, but we are all different and can tolerate different things. You will find your own successes. Best wishes, Rosemary (P.S.      I had my permanent ileo on June 28th.  My surgeon told me I could eat anything I wanted but to chew, chew, chew.  I held off on salads until a few weeks ago but haven't had any problems eating it.  I do stay away from popcorn, corn and nuts.  The other day I had a big Jewish pickle and saw the little seeds floating along in my bag..lol.  Didn't have a problem though.  I was in the hospital once post op for dehydration.  They gave me a huge potassium pill but it came out whole in my bag...and let me tell ya..it was enormous!  I figured if it could spit that out, I could probably eat most anything.  But I wouldn't chance it again..lol.  Good luck.  It is nice to eat anything once again, isn't it?

  Hello, my friend has a ostomy and she says banannas plug her, and corn too...so becareful ....don't know much about this ostomy suff, but she had crohns and a ostomy since she was 19 and she is 55 right now.

I was told that for the rest of my life I am not to eat mushrooms and popcorn. I think everything else is fair game. My doc said that mushrooms act like a sponge and expand which could cause a blockage.

I eat anything and everything incl mushrooms, popcorn, nuts, corn, fruit and potato skins, etc without a problem. Everything in moderation, just CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!

I can and do eat everything (just look at the number on the scale now!!!!hahahahaha) Chew chew chew. I've even been able to eat dairy!!!!! Hellllllooooooo Dairy Queen Blizzards.

Allie  Hey sweetie, how ya doing?  Are you allergic to Dairy?  Now you can eat it?  If you are allergic what do you take to tollerate dairy.  I have found nothing that really helps me with that, so If you got the secret then you need to share with me girl...

Good good here. My symptoms started 13 years ago when I ate a banana split and promptly threw it up. I was always the kid who would have a glass of milk rather then koolaid or pop. I just started staying away from it because anything more then a few spoonfuls in my tea or a slice of cheese would make me VERY ill. I tried, oh did I try to have milkshakes and ice cream...the stories I could tell you about how hard I tried to eat Haagan Das would make you laugh. about 4 months ago or 6 months AFTER I had my colostomy I had a McDonald's Flurry craving and since my husband has NEVER known me to have a craving for ice cream, well you can just imagine the talk we had. LOL. I ate a small Flurry and felt fine. I was in shock, awe and now the ice cream aisle in the super market is NOT safe. I am currently enjoying a bowl of Smartie ice cream. I think having my colostomy has given me dairy back. Sounds strange but I have no other idea why after 13 years I can enjoy it again.

on the way home from the hospital after surgery we stopped at mcdonalds and i got some fries, then we stopped at hardees and i got a milkshake, and let me tell you that was the best food i ever had and ever will have! I know sounds stupid, but it was just such a big thing for me.
and OMG if you love icecream get the bday cake milkshake from zaxbys, or find some redvelvet icecream you will think you died and went to heaven

Allie and you to Summerstorm:  STOP IT NOW... how cool that you can now eat ice cream and dairy products...  I can even tell when a pill has dairy in it ...like the regular probiotics...about killed me...  Every once in awhile I will have pizza or Ice Cream and I take the Dairy Ease Pill and just suffer.  Cuz a gal has to have some of it sometimes...

I did eat a part of a happy meal from Mc Donalds tonight...I ate the regular hamburger, and about 4 fries and 3 sips of the soda.   I very rarely eat fries, and never drink soda. 

They have set the date for the 29th for MRI of my brain so got that out of the way, then I hate the waiting to find out what is going on ....

I have eaten so much candy and cookies this week the doc said I was 3 lbs heavier than last month, but what he did not know is that I have put that on in the last few days...eating all that junk at night.  But now I am sick of all the sugar and my weight will be back to normal in 2 days...so it was funny to see his face when he weighed me,  he is so use to saying you have lost more weight...so I fixed him and ate till I practally puked...

Well its almost 11:00 pm so got to hit the hay.  May all of you have a peaceful night, without all the pain and suffering that we go through on a daily basis.  So one night of rest dear God for my fellow suffers.

I'm gonna say it's individual to the person...I eat EVERYTHING (and I MEAN EVERYTHING) including mushrooms, popcorn, jerky, pickles...you name it.

Yes, some items do not digest completely, but it's okay if they come out in your pouch!

You can always try questionable foods in moderation...small handful of popcorn, for example, and if you aren't bothered by it try a little more the next time and so one...just chew, chew, chew and drink fluids! Oh, and only try one new food at a time:)

have you tried making things with veggie cheese? you can make cheese pasta at home with and its pretty good. It just doesnt melt as good, so it takes a little longer.

I can eat most anything also but I eat very slow and I chew, chew, chew. Some things I do better with than others but for the most part I can eat anything. I do have to watch nuts though they just come out so mealy but I do indulge every once in awhile.

I have really stayed away from salads because of the seeds in the cucumbers and tomatoes. Is it ok to eat them. I have been wanting a good salad for ever.

I had an ileostomy on July 31, 2010
Awoke one morning with severe bloody diarrhea. CT showed a mass on my colon that I was told was cancer, turned out to not be.
Thank God
Dr done a colon resection. Ended up with a fistula that would not heal.
Finally after being on TPN for about 2 months my surgeon sent me somewhere else.
Thank God again.
My new surgeon did a c-scope and said my colon was in terrible shape and he took a big portion out. he said he left enough to reconnect it later. That is if when he does another c-scope that the rest of my colon he left is still ok. If not then who knows.
Just waiting for good news.

you should be able to eat a salad, just start slow, maybe limit the cucumbers and tomatoes, i had salad at dinner.
Although i just eat lettuce, cheese and croutons. I liek carrots and havent had a problem but they come out exactly like they went in and its gross, lol. At first, when i ate salad i got the shreds kind, or i cut it really really tiny, that way it was already partly cut up. a few things to be prepared of for salads though, lettuce doesnt flush well, and if you eat ranch dressing be prepared for a horrible smell!

  Even without a stoma or ostomy, I am reconnceted and I decided to have a salad with tiny bit of ranch on it tonight.  So took my Dairy pill and ate a small salad....dairy sure make an awful smell for me too..What a buch of stinkers we are.

So I said goodbye to my daughter tonight as she is leaving for Calif at 2 am and going to work on her marriage.  So sad to see her go, really did not get enough alone time with her, but proud of her for working on her marriage...so time will tell.

Oh by the way I have been like stoned , really out of it for days now, cant stay awake, just talked to a pharmacy and the Depacote he put me on is too high and he says that will make you all groggy.  So I am calling the doc in the morning to tell him but I am going to cut back on one pill tonight...so I can get something done tomorrow thats if I am awake..LOL
