hollister convex seal

I have been using Eakin seal 839002 for a few months with good results. Cleanup is difficult when changing. I received some Hollister convex seals a few days ago and used the first one today. Removed the convex side paper and put it on. When I tried to remove the flat side paper the seal wanted to come off of my skin. The seal sticks better to the paper than my skin. I managed to get the paper off and put on my pouch. The seal gets very thin at the outer edge. It does not leave me very confident. Time will tell.

I changed my pouch this morning after four days. I was impressed. There was a small leak where I have a depression next to my stoma. The rest of the way around was absolutely leak free. The seal swelled up going deep into my abdomen. The swelled seal felt spongy. And it came off clean! None of the seal was left around my stoma. No mess like with the Eakin.

I had one more seal and put it on. I will have to change Friday after three days. We have company coming Friday. When we have company it's for a few days......we live on a lake.....and I don't want to change with friends here.

It's a Hollister Adapt convex barrer ring number 79520. It comes in three stoma sizes. It is a separate ring like an eakin. Your wafer goes on top.

I also started using the adapt rings from Hollister.  I was having leaks everyday or so with the paste.  Now I can go 3 days when using the adapt rings.  I could probably go longer but I am ok with 3 days. I also have nothing to clean up when I change either.  It comes off with the wafer.

I am using the hollister 8528 pouch that is convec and I use the adapt barrier rings with it. I was using paste and that was a big mess, It was hard to get off my skin around my stoma. With this adapt barrier ring it comes off completely. No mess at all. I think I could go longer than the 3 days I have been going but I really don't like the looks of the bag after awhile. Where I lay when I sleep it gets all up in the top of the pouch and is hard to clean. I read somewhere not to get water up past the stoma when you are cleaning your pouch. That is why I don't like the way it looks after a few days. Does anyone put water up over their stoma? I think I could see where it would make your wafer leak. But then again if you have a good seal then it should not leak should it? Oh well, just thinking out loud.

It's real funny that when I first got my ileostomy that my stoma nurse said that the eakin seal was the best. Then my home health nurse says that the paste was the best. Well, I have found out for myself that the hollister adapt ring barriers are the best. Paste and eakin seals are messy and hard to clean off.
I may try the rinsing of the whole pouch this weekend when I am home and don't have to worry about going out anywhere. I know it would make me feel better if I could clean the whole thing.

are you using the convex seals with a flat wafer or a convex wafer? I'm interested in trying these seals out since I'm new to the convexity game and would love to avoid the mess of the eakin. I scraped at it today for 10 minutes before i got it all off!

I'm also having trouble with the convex wafers because my output is fairly solid and it tends to pancake. I have to push it down the bag, so with the convex ones it just sits in that little cup area eating away at the wafer even more than flat wafers because i can't push it down as easily. I'm hoping that as I continue to heal my stoma will stop being flush and pop out some. *fingers crossed*

Having friends over for a few days so I had to change today after only three days. I don't like to change with visitors here.

Pouch and convex seal came off in one piece clean as a whistle. No residue to clean up. No leaks.

I'm happy.

I just changed. 1 1/2 days. I had a lot of irritation and itchiness. Massive leak out to the end of the wafer. Guess it is important to be sure to dry the Friars. I MADE SURE THIS TIME.

It's Friars Balsam Compound Benzoin Tincture USP. It is a liquid that you put on ulcers. It dries and is a little sticky. It protects from the sewage (poop) and helps heal. Oh, and it BURNS LIKE FIRE for a few seconds. But it works. It comes in a 100 ml bottle for about $35. Worth every penny. Lasts a long time. Not in drug stores. I ordered it from Canada. Somebody else found it in the US.

Yes I got my samples. I tried it on friday and didn't have a good experience.
On saturday during the day, I started to have some pain around the top half of my stoma and it got worse and worse as the day went on. It felt like someone was punching a fresh bruise. So i took my wafer and the ring off and my skin was all purple around the top half of my stoma and my stitches were oozing pus. When i initially put it on my skin looked great, and the stitches were the same as always. I think the convexity of it was just too much for that area or at least while I still have stitches. When do those suckers dissolve anyway? It's been almost 6 weeks!
My home health nurse said she couldn't come out till monday so if i was concerned about infection to go the ER which I did. the dr there said it might be infected and gave me antibiotics just in case. But honestly, it felt a lot better once I took the wafer and ring off. I left them off for 3 hours while i was at the ER. so I think the biggest problem was all the pressure from the ring. *sigh* i just can't seem to find a system that works. Oh and i discovered I'm sensitive to coloplast wafers which makes me sad too because i loved their bags, so easy to clean, and rolled up nice and short. boo!!! so for now I'm back to hollister and an eakin ring.

btw I got my friars on amazon.com for around $8.00 for 1oz bottle. and the brand that they sell on amazon is also available at Whole Foods in the beauty area. it cleared my ulceration up in a little over a week!
