5 day post-op...had ileostomy/collectomy done

So I finally got the procedure done...and most of my rectal pain has deminished...all of my pain now is centrally located on the colon and midline incision from surgery...

I am currently using an 8inch hollister two piece and wanted to know if this is a good choice...is there benefits to 2 or 1 piece bags...is ther smaller ones available

I also bought an elastic waist support from azzbackwards...going to see how that helps

Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated ....thanks everyone and will keep ya posted on my progress....So far so good

     Glad to hear you are feeling well.  It takes awhile.  I still have a bit of discomfort in the anus because my surgeon didn't sew it closed.  He said there are more complications when that is done.  Who knows?  Guess I just have to trust his judgment.

     Do you have a permanent ileo?  That is what I have.  I find the one piece coloplast bags better than the Hollister.  I had a few Hollister bags tear on me and that is not a good experience.  Coloplast holds much better.  However, their two piece systems are a bit tricky.  Even my ostomy nurse who came to my house the first month after my operation couldn't figure out how to snap them on and off.

     I deal with Edgepark for my supplies.  It is somewhat overwhelming when you first come home from the hospital but now it is second nature.  Good luck!

Congrats on your surgery. I hope you are on the road to feeling well.

I use Hollister two piece as well. I have never had a problem with them, quality-wise. Two pieces are easier if you want to change your bag more often (a lot of people do like two pouches per one wafer) or look at your stoma. They also make putting on your appliance much easier since you can see your stoma when you're putting on just the wafer.

Hollister makes a mini-pouch that I use instead of the normal sized one. I like it much better.

Right now your stoma is changing and will for some time. Why don't you call Hollister and Convatec and talk to them about different types of pouch and get some samples that you can try. They do know what they are talking about. What is good for one person is not necessarily good for another.

I use Edgepark as well to get my supplies and their customer service is topnotch! i would recommend at least getting a supply catalog from them to help you browse what's out there. you can request one online or call. Looking at it gave a me a lot of ideas on what samples I wanted to try from each supplier. it was easier for me to navigate then all the different websites. It's hard to go through a website to look for something when you don't know what you're looking for. Then you can go on each companies' website with the product numbers and request specific products! (i like this because i hate talking to strangers on the phone.) I used nothing but samples for the first 3 weeks out of the hospital.

oh and i also use hollister. I prefer coloplast's Sensura bags for ease of cleaning, and their profile is much more discreet because of the adhesive coupling. But i get all itchy from their wafers :( so i'm stuck with my second choice of hollister. I've got super sensitive skin though.

I totally agree with Dan, whats good for one is not necessarily good for another ostomate, so getting as many samples as you can is always a good idea and that way you can decide what works best and yes your stoma will change a bit over time so you will need different sizes. It took almost 12 months before my stoma settled into a steady size. I am glad to hear your doing well and I'm sure you will continue to feel better as each day passes.

Like it's already been said, appliances are an individual choice! Honestly, I didn't try different products until my stoma was to a steady size...that way I had a better idea if it would work long term. The system my WOC Nurse set me up with worked fine, I just 'fine tuned' the product to my personal preference!

Any weight fluctuations will also affect your appliance fit sad so don't get discouraged...it is a lot of trial and error.

I agree with looking through a catalog...it is VERY informative!
