After ostomy do you still have...

If anyone has had an ostomy because of Ulcerated Colitis, can you tell me if after surgery you still have the external manifestions., i.e. arthritis, eye problems, etc., from having UC, or are they also gone?

Attending my first ostomy group this afternoon...

some of the things can stay, it depends on how bad it was. And some of the joint problems are a result of the steroids or meds.
But for me, i had a skin problem that, while it hasn't gone complelty away, has gotten ALOT better, and my eyesight got better also, after surgery.

Yes, if you had UC you can continue to have those conditions that are referred to as extra-intestinal manifestations like joint pain, arthritis, eye problems etc. For some the conditions go away with surgery, for others they stay.

I just got back from my first ostomy group meeting in my local area, the people are so nice. i have to admit I asked someone if I could see her ileostomy, with not hesitation she showed me. I was taken a back a little but not as bad!

     Renee....I feel soooo much better since my operation as far as joint problems, high blood pressure (gone), high blood sugar due to prednisone use...gone, eye problems...gone!  Looking back...I believe if I continued the way I was with all those meds and that awful prednisone, I bet I would be dead within a year or so.

what kinds of eye problems can be related to UC? My vision has been getting worse at an accelerated rate but my eye doctor just acts like it is normal!

I have arthritis, but I can't say whether it's inherited, due to psoriatic arthritis or due to IBD - probably all three! It's just one of those things that I accept as a sign of getting older.

My diagnosis was crohns/colitis and after my surgery I developed really bad joint pain and kept getting eye problems I was promptly sent off to both an eye specialist who diagnosed iritis and was treated with steroid eye drops and antibiotic eye drops then off to the rhuemy who diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis and for that my treatment is methotrexate injections and humira injections. Funny how it didn't show until after my surgery, the docs theory is the drugs I was on for crohns/colitis kept the eye and joint problems at bay then when they took me off the drugs after surgery I got the extra problems. But I'm also of the belief I have to accept I'm not getting any younger either so things are more likely to go wrong I guess.

I still have joint problems in my right elbow but not as bad as before. :)

My hips hurt but I think it is my colon and not arthritis. I had really bad hip pain a few years ago before UC and it turned out to be diverticulitis that was about to rupture.

Before I had surgery, I had so many extra-intestinal symptoms with my uc. I had bad arthritis in my knees and hips. I had episcleritis of my eyes. I had erythema nodosa lots of places. Geographic tongue (it's really weird).
But I have none of the above now post surgery! I was worried b/c they told me just what Summerstorm said, about maybe they'd go away, maybe not, but they did! No probs so far.

I had the same experience as andorable...after surgery my arthritis kicked in full force, but my doctors took me off of all meds. I also got erethema nodosum all over my legs (sp?) I am taking the methotrexate shots now but it isnt working so next step is humira I think? I have also been off and on prednisone for years so that couldnt have helped...wish you all the healthy days possible...good luck

my arthritis still hangs around. That is all I really had out side the colon... Good luck!
