Hi everyone! I'm in desperate need of some advice. I've never posted before but have looked around at the HealingWell forums in the past :)
I think I'll start with a brief background:
I'm 20 years old. When I was 18 I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. I had both peri-anal involvement (no pain from peri-anal) and GI symptoms. I went on Entocort and 6MP. The 6MP worked rather well for a while. In October of 2009, I thought I had hemorrhoids and was in a lot of pain. Well, went to colo-rectal doctor after not seeing her for quite some time and I was told I had a massive abcsess. I had the worst bottom she'd ever seen. I had a fistualaotomy with setons and was put on Remicade. The combination of the Remicade and surgery worked wonders! My botton was slowly healing but I never had a chance to completely heal. Then, in March 2010, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Because of it being immuno-suppresant, I had to go off the Remicade and 6MP. Well because I went off the Remicade my bottom flared up very badly a few months later. To try to give my bottom a chance to heal, in August 2010 I had a temporary ileosomy. We haven't had much luck so far with healing my bottom up. Right now we're experimenting with medications. I'm also personally packing the abcsess with hydrofera blue to try to get it to heal. It's extremely painful and I'm having difficulty sitting.
Well here's where my question comes into play. I am currently a college student. This current semester I was lucky and able to take online classes from home. Unfortunately, I don't have that option for this coming semester. I either have to go to school on campus and live there, or not attend school at all and stay at home. I'm not sure what would be best for me at this point. I would have to live at school in a dorm with other people my age; let's face it, many 20 year old's are immature and can't handle an ostomy bag. I've lost many friends as well as significant others once they found out about my ostomy. I'm not sure how other roommates would take it.
Has anyone else lived in a setting with lots of people you don't know? I'm just not sure if a college campus setting would be best for me right now. With constant doctors appointments, packing my abscess and dealing with the bag, I don't know if college is realistic at the moment. Additionally, with a college dorm there is no privacy. I would be sharing a common bathroom with a large amount of people. I can't imagine trying to change the entire appliance in a dorm. Does anyone have any advice? Any other college students living in dorms or anyone else in a similar setting? Positive or negative experiences? I would really appreciate anyone who would give their thoughts. Let me know if any additional information is necessary! Thank you everyone!!
