Hi all had my surgery on wednesday did well for a few days then got sick lots of paim bad heartburn the dr put in a tube thru my stoma my intestines were pretty swollen my output had never gotten normal? then i threw up felt better for a little while xray showed no blockage then got sick again right after a 2nd xray rith after that my output increased and so far as of today sunday feeling pretty good they were going to release me initally today but now it will probably be tues night or wed today only ice chips Pray that iwll not have a relaspe God Bless Trixiemom

     Sorry to hear you had these setbacks trixiemom.  I had my surgery, total colectomy with permanent ileostomy, on June 28th.  I had two setbacks while still in the hospital.  My operation was on a Monday.  The resident surgeon said I could eat solid food, against my better judgment, on Thursday and maybe go home the following day.  I ate the food and got violently ill that evening rolleyes .  The surgeon came in and said it would be best if they put the ng tube back in.  Ok with me as long as the vomiting would stop, and it did.  I filled up two big viles with bile..ugh.  The NG tube worked its way out on Saturday, but by then I was doing better.  The surgeon also told me to listen to my own body and NOT to listen to anyone else who told me I could eat.  Something tells me he read the riot act to his resident.  Then, on Tuesday, eight days post op, my blood pressure dropped to 70/40, heart rate soared to 152 and I had a temp of 105.  I never saw doctors and nurses move so fast...CT scan, blood culture, xrays.  The next morning I was fine and they never did figure out what happened.  I was hospitalized for 11 days.  Still not 100% but I am having a myriad of blood tests done tomorrow to try to figure out why my hair is falling out and I feel so dragged out.

     Take things slowly..by the way...I had ulcerative proctitis for twelve years prior to my operation and ran the gamut of meds.

Trixiemom~hang in there...Ileus does happen to some of us mad That is where your intestine either wake up and go back to sleep or don't wake up for a longer period than expected. You usually won't have output, may not have an appetite and feel nauseated or throw up. An NG Tube would be common in that case (like Christine1946 mentioned) and it will relieve the symptoms almost immediately.

Take it easy with ice chips and go slow on food once you have output...keep us posted!

Hi Trixiemom,

I hope you are feeling better soon! It is good they are keeping you in the hospital a little longer, I bet you are ready to go home. I have read some stories though where people were sent home too early and had to come back, so just hang in there! You are in my prayers and I send good thoughts your way every day.

thankyou for your responces I am going to take it very slow so far today i am only doing ice chips but very slowly if they allow liquids tomorrow i will go even slower even if it means that my thanksgiving meal is turkey broth and a spoonful of mash potatoes and gravy they are going to leave in the tube that is in my stoma i can even put it back in if it falls out. oh any ideas on how to help me if i need an ng tube in the future??? It went to the back of my throat then I gaged so much that i could not do it. was drinking water while it was going in but that never helped God bless Trixiemom

trixiemom - I hope you get to feeling better soon! My family will put you into our prayers. It's a shame what we have to put our bodies through sometimes but I do believe it makes us stronger in the end! God bless!

Trixiemom, I have been waiting on an update from you. So glad to hear from you.  :-)

 I also did wonderful on day 1 and 2, but started vomiting on day 3. It was terrible. I could not sleep laying down and had to stand up every 20 minutes or so because my intestines were so swollen and full of stomach bile that my stomach contents would come up. It was 4 days of constant nausea and vomiting, but when my stoma started having output, I filled bag after bag. It was several liters that must of been stuck inside of my intestines because when it started moving out, I started feeling better. My doctor didn't even mention an ng tube until day 5, and when he mentioned this, I never threw up again. smilewinkgrin I was terrified of the ng tube.

Wow, they never stuck a tube into my stoma. rolleyes Did this help you with the vomiting?

Just hang in there and go very slow as they advance your diet. I was in the hospital for 7 days and was not allowed anything until day 6 and that was broth and juice, only clear liquids. When my stoma started producing, I improved rapidly.

Call me if you feel up to it. I am off work all week for Thanksgiving. YIPPEE cool

     Trixiemom, two residents placed the ng tube, up my nose and then as it was going down my throat one of the residents gave me a glass of water and told me to keep swallowing.  Guess that was the trick.  I admit, it was not pleasant but a heck of a lot better than that vomiting.  Unlike Tracy's surgeon, as soon as my surgeon saw that I had vomited and I kept hiccuping, he didn't waste any time getting that ng tube..lol.  You are smart to take things slow.  You'll be fine smilewinkgrin !  Have a great Thanksgiving, even if it is turkey broth.

Sounds like a smart doctor trixie...listen to your body :) Sending prayers that you continue to improve.
