Newbie with ileostomy

I am currently using a one piece convatec pouch. I have a few questions

Do I need to use stoma strips around my stoma or can I just use the flat wax piece...
What are some good one piece pouches you have used?

     No familiar with the Convatec but I use the one piece Coloplast and I just put the wafer with the bag right on my skin.  I have to use Stoma powder as I have some irritation.  I would imagine they are similar bags?

   I use two piece convatec that has snap on bag works good for me.

   Also use small amout of paste around opening of wafer and some powder but dont leave alot powder on kinda pat it off.

   Have had mine since August 2010.

You don't have to use strips, seals or paste...some people don't use any additional adhesive but I think you can get longer wear time with them. It would really depend on your body and activity level. It won't hurt anything to try but if you experience any pain/itching you'll want to change your appliance and use paste/strips/seal.

Personally, I prefer a two piece appliance so I can change out pouches. They never last as long as my wafers!

How long ago was your ileo surgery?

Hi Curt! I'm a newbie with an ileostomy as well. I had my surgery for a permanent ileostomy 13 days ago and am recovering well. I am using a one piece pouch from Hollister and use a small amount of paste like Dale mentioned.

Next week I have an appointment with the my Stoma Nurse to learn how to use the 2-piece system. The 1-piece I have is okay but I've heard a lot of people prefer the 2-piece.

Hi loopdeloop I had my surgery Nov17th a little before you. I have a loop ileostomy and I am using the convatec 2 piece system . I like that my insurance has allowed me to change the bag daily. i feel so much cleaner than using the 1 piece system. I use either a little paste or eakin around for extra protection. Thanks, Trixiemom. I will have to look into whether or not my insurance would allow me to do this also. Would be great to change the bag everday versus every three which I am doing now.

I've never tried a one-piece system for the same reason as OHIO. My wafer lasts 6+ days, and I'm ready for a new pouch after 3-4 days.

I use the Coloplast Assura Extended Wear wafer #2833 with cloth covered pouch #13986. It's the same system my ostomy nurse recommended in the hospital over 4 years ago, and I've only had one leak (which was my fault, because I was trying to push it one more day! ;)

If Coloplast has a one-piece with an Extended Wear wafer, I would give that a try!

Cecilia: does the pouch snap onto the wafer or do you have to twist it on?

I had my surgery for a permanent ileostomy in October, best choice I have made in years...went from 112 to 140 in 2 months...I like to shower every morning before work...so I change my bag everyday when I shower, thats why I like the 1 piece.. I have been using hollister but I think my insurance only covers 20 bags a month , leaving me paying for 10 every month, not a big deal because I like a clean bag/wafer daily....so its worth the 60 bucks.

I used convatec one piece clear pouch 400598 for a long time. It is very flexible and flat. It is hard to notice under clothes. 400599 is opaque. I have recently had to change to a convex wafer. I have tried two piece pouches and find they stick out farther.....especially the convex wafer. All the convatec pouches I have tried had the tape around the outside of the wafer. I have two coloplast samples. Neither has tape, and I can't believe the enormous clip for the drain.
