Skin around stoma irritated!!!

Hello,

I have been having the worst time healing the skins around my stoma. I try to make sure I fit the wafer on correctly and also use an eakin seal. I powder the open wounds up and everything and my skin doesn't seem to want to heal up. Any suggestions on what to do or on what other medicines I can use to speed up the healing time?

I never use powders. The wafer cannot stick to the powder. You will have a built in leak and more irritation. I use Friars Balsam Compound Benzoin Tincture. I get it from Canada. Smeone else has found it in Florida. It comes in a 100 ml bottle. You put it on with a Qtip. When it dries it is sticky. BURNS LIKE H*** on open skin....but it works.

It's about $35 for the bottle, but it lasts a long time.
I put it on with every change as maintenance.

I also have issues its like a bad heat rash that will oose then dry and flake . Is this simmilar or do you have open wounds . will that compound work on a large area?

I have been trying a different pouch and have been having a lot of itch and irritation. Weirdbeard uses a similar product and he covers the whole wafer area. So I tried it with my Friars....coated the whole area with a cotton ball. Worked magnificantly. I have no itch or irritation. I am on my second wafer with the Friars and it feels great. The first one came off clean with no residue. The Friars came off with the wafer except under the tape.

My Tincture of Benzoin is a spray from Smith and Nephew and is much cheaper than $35/bottle. I haven't used it yet because of my yeast infection CRAP, but I will hopefully be able to someday.

80's chick... what prental do you take? I want to take one (plan to try getting pregnant soon) and have an ileostomy too. the dha fish oil in some stinks! and many are so big... What do you take?

I use the powder then spray it with 3M spray. It really did the trick.

I use the Friar's Balsam (thanks to polishdan) all around and touch up the open sore with powder. That sore is slowly shrinking. DON'T FORGET TO KEEP THINGS DRY before applying your ring and pouch.

ditto on the Friar's balsam! That stuff is great!! I bought mine through Amazon; they have a smaller bottle it's only $8 I think. But you don't need much at once. I usually blow dry the area after and then let it sit for about 20 min if I have time and I feel like I won't have any movements. Hope you have some luck with one of these things!

I had this same problem when I first got my colostomy. I went to a dermatologist and tried alot of prescription topical creams, but what works well for me is CeraVe cream. Also I quit using the alcohol based wipes. I still have irritation now and again but not like in the begining. I also have noticed that the more I sweat, the worse the flare-ups

I don't actually take a prenatal anymore...needed to update my signature. I take Flintstones multivitamins chewables or gummy.

Hi Comitoex , I have had the same trouble as you for the last 8 years ...Its very frustrating , I seen a dermatoligist and she gave me a perscription for Ectosone Scalp Lotion 0.1% ....It works extremely well , when needed...My insurance even covers the cost..Hope this helps.. wink
