Also, you might want to try very small, frequent meals, 4-6 per day and not 3 large ones. Try not to overwhelm your gut with large meals. I also recall reading that you should try to consume your daily liquids in between meals. Try just sipping water during a meal but not drinking a tall glass of water, etc.
I found that the LRD turned my situation around in 48 hours. Before that I was confined to my bathroom and bedroom. It was awful. I had been eating fresh fruit, high fiber breads, bagels, etc. and I was just a mess. Once I started eating white rice, bananas, cottage cheese, applesauce, plain roasted chicken, turkey, fish, I did much better. The stool was formed. I also recall my local bakery's white bread was perfect for my touchy gut. What I know we're not supposed to eat but my gut responded to it. To this very day a turkey sub on white sub bread can turn around D for me. It's as if my gut is telling me - I want white bread!
Over the years I have tried various things such as Fibercon (didn't help). A pediatric dose of Colace did and I'm still on it, it helps keep the stool to an easily passed consistency. I have to order it thru my local pharmacy (50 mg). I started taking a probiotic in pill form last May and highly recommend it. The one I am on and helps reduce D for me too, is Renew Life, Critical Colon, 80 Billion Count. Found at my local health food store in the chilled section (near organic yogurt and flaxseed oils). It's pricey, $47 for a bottle of 30, but worth it. You take this probiotic before bedtime, on a completely (this is important) empty stomach. The pill is encoated and will not open until it reaches the lower colon, just where I need it most and possibly you too. I read about the benefits of probiotics in pill form over on the ulcerative colitis forum here. Sure you can eat organic yogurt but you'd need to consume a gallon of it in one day's time to equal what you can take in pill form.
If I think of more suggestions I will post them.
I just learned that diet was the key to keeping my D down to a minimum. I never went back to my pre-ostomy bowel habits or diet (they removed 90% of my sigmoid and 15 inches of colon above it in my case, for cancer).
