Rectal stump with mucous fistula

Anyone still have their rectum with it attached to abdomen and have a mucous fistula? I still have my rectum and it wasnt just closed off. It is attached up to my abdomen from the inside and I have a mucous fistula. I guess this was to prevent a blowout. I had a tiny pinhole fistula formed from the surgery (on purpose) so that it would drain mucous but it seems to be getting bigger and more mucous. anyone else ever have this???

     I don't know about a mucus fistula.  I had my rectum and colon removed but still have my anus.  I seep mucus all the time and sometimes blood.  Not certain if the blood is coming from vagina though.  PAP smear was ok.  I have to have a transvaginal ultrasound on the 7th of Feb.  The surgeon said I had a hematoma or abscess in the anus about a month post surgery and he suctioned that out in the office shocked .  Not in any pain.  Are you having pain?  I do have hemorrhoids and use Tucks and a hemorrhoid cream.

     If I were you, I would have my surgeon take another look up there.

i keep reading about people having a second stoma for their mucous to come out, but mine is just a small hole near my underwear line. I know i have diversion colitis which is why I have the blood etc from my rectum and fistula because I guess when you still have the rectum but no food flowing through it can't live off of the foods etc so it bleeds which i guess is ok, but i worry about my fistula growing a bit. It is weird. No I don't have pain.
Sorry to hear about your problems you are having. Hope all is well. Is there a reason you didn't have your anus closed too?? I kept my rectum for now because they said to wait until I have kids :)

Rumple...have you just had your colon removed and are waiting to have a J pouch built? My son had a mucous fistula between his first and second surgery. The purpose was that if the disease became very active in the rectum during this period the docs wanted the mucus to drain out through the abdominal wall instead of entering his abdomen. By the sound of it your mucous fistula is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

collicat- I will have a permanent ileostomy. In June I had my entire large intestine removed except the rectum so far. I just kept my rectum until I have children which we will try for in the near future. I guess my odds were considered better getting pregnant without the direct pelvic surgery involved in the rectum removal. I had active disease in my rectum, but they said it may even calm down without anything passing through. They attached my rectum up so that a small mucous fistula would form probably for the same reason your son did. To prevent the mucous from going into my abdomen. My fear is that after it healed the resulting hole was like a pinhole, now it seems a little bit larger (7 months later) I do have more mucous now than I did then so I wast sure if it got bigger to adapt to the level of mucous, or if that is abnormal :( I had so many issues with my crohns that now I feel better and hope its nothing bad.

     Rumple....I had no say in the matter.  As a matter of fact, I didn't even know my anus was still there until my first post op visit with the surgeon.  I had some problems inside the anus and asked him if I could get hemorrhoids and he said, "Yes, because your anus is still there."  I was shocked.  I told him I thought they always sew it closed when the rectum and colon are removed.  In his opinion there are more complications when sewn closed.  I have mucous seeping all the time and sometimes bleeding.  He said it is better that stuff comes out (makes sense).

I had my emergency colectomy last week, and my surgeon created an end-ileostomy and also a mucous fistula because she wanted to retain my colon for the possibility of receiving a J-pouch in my future. But I am much more interested by what I've seen about the BCIR surgery.

My mucous fistula has been somewhat annoying since surgery. The surgeons warned me that it would leak mucous and that I could also pass mucous from my rectum - but they did not tell me to expect a violent episode of gas and bloody diarrhea just a few days after surgery, nor did they warn me that episodes of sudden, profuse bleeding from the fistula would be possible. (I found myself back at the ER today when my dressing suddenly soaked through all layers, including my clothes.)

I feel as if my ulcerative colitis is still active in my rectum, and right now it's making gas noises which are preventing me from sleep, and I desperately wish that it had just been removed at the time of my surgery. My colon nearly killed me - I don't need my rectum to hinder my recovery in any way, even if it means 'sacrificing' a more 'normal' way to pass stools via a J-pouch instead of a BCIR. I don't think I'd mind the catheter, especially compared to the ileostomy - if anything it seems more controlled and convenient to me.
