After checking most of the posts I don't see the best advice I was given

During bag change, any irritation was to be treated with a cotton ball soaked with Maalox.

After cleaning really well, , dab it on, let it dry, and continue with change such as powder and barrier prep.

That and shaving with a really good wet/dry electric shaver in the shower helped me tremendously.

Anyone else use Maalox?

What is Maalox?
I had no leakage problems for 3 weeks after the procolectomy. Then I went to a rehab clinic for 3 weeks in which I had constant leakage problems,these cleared up when I got home again. But in the meantime, to clear up the skin irritations so that the bag seal would stay uncompromised, I used stoma powder VERY sparingly, and an Eakin ring. Finally, it became clear that I need a convex light bag.
But I'd like to know about Maalox, because I'll have this stoma probably until January.

Maalox is an antacid, liquid stuff that you take for indigestion.

I haven't heard this tip before. Makes sense, as the output is very acidic, and that could neutralize it. But does it act as a barrier or help heal the irritation? I always have irritation near my stoma if I don't use an Eakin, and it doesn't seem like a bit of dried maalox would be as much protection as the Eakin. Do you use it right near your stoma too?

Would it help to drink the maalox?

I had a family friend tell me that I should get a bottle of this once I have mine done and that it works awesome, she said someone in the hospital with her told her about it when she first got her colostomy.

Maalox or Mylanta work great (just don't get the mint kind - ouch!). Don't shake the bottle, skim the watery bit off the top and dab the thicker mixture on to your skin, let it dry (a hairdryer on it's lowest setting helps) then put the wafer on over the top. It works really well.

PS B'derech, drinking it doesn't help for your skin.
