Thank goodness for sure seals!!!

We went out to eat, and i went to the bathroom, and thought i could smell the paste, and i was like, eh i'm just crazy.  So then we went to kohl's and i tried on some clothes, and could still smell it, but still thought i was just crazy.  So went to the bathroom, and when i got there the smell was pretty strong, so i thought the filter had failed, and i looked to see, well it wasn't the filter, so i looked all around the wafer, and on the left side, there was a leak!  luckily the sureseal was keeping it in, and we were fixing to go home, so i didn't have to change it.  When i got home, i changed it, and no output had leaked onto my skin, it looked like the wafer and the paste had melted and run, it was very strange.

Anyway, i was soooo glad i had that sure seal on, it kept all that mess in!

That was my first leak in public in over 4 years.

thank goodness for that!! what are sure seals and where do you get them? do we have them in the UK? thanks

Ironmum .... I just typed in sure seal in the search box up above on this page....there are a lot of threads that will probably give you a lot of info about them...not sure if you can get them in the UK...off the top of my head I forget the name of the manufacturer but I am sure it is noted in the threads FYI

Yeah for sure seals. They havesaved me countless times. Don't always wear them because of expense but if I have question that's first lilne of defense!!

Are sureseal rings the same as the Eakin rings? Or do they work better?

I use convex light bags with an Eakin ring, but yesterday I still had leak because stool was clumping on top of the stoma and not moving, it all pushed itself to the side and dissolved the seal. Luckily I could it quickly enough and had suppies with me and could change it in a public bathroom. That was weird, but I'm still getting used to having the bag and stoma in different places and situations.

The sure seals (picture a CD) go on the outside of the wafer. It is a super thin clear sticky extra protection that seals the entire perimeter of the wafer. The pouch goes thru the center hole of the seal and the remainder of the seal sticks to the outside of the wafer if that makes sense at all.

Definitely a little tricky to get on and remove. He used them when he was having a leaking situation and also to see what they are like. For those of you with a dependable system and set up which my husband seems to have right now.....we plan on using these for swimming type situations or maybe when extra protection is felt it might be needed depending on the circumstances. Maybe a travel day on a plane with a fresh change for a little extra insurance etc.

Ironmum, A sureseal is basically tegaderm so if you can't get them in the UK you could get tegaderm and use it instead. If you went to their site you can see how they are put over the wafer. alpglobal.com It lasts longer than tegaderm and much more sticky though. I'm pretty sure that you should be able to buy it from a supplier over here if you can't find it over there. A lot of insurances don't cover them, (mine does thankfully) so many people get them from different sites.

Ironmum, the ones that you can get in UK are quite thick. I have tried various ones from Salts and think it was coloplast and they are not like tegaderm or opsite which are much thinner. I found the ones available in UK much too thick and didn't stick very well at all so now use opsite which is available on a roll and cut strips off if I feel the need for additional adhesion.

My GP happily prescribed mefix tape, which I am using at the moment before I found opsite. Difference with mefix is that it isn't see through or waterproof but is a thin adhesive dreesing tape again available on a roll that I can cut to strips. So I will also ask for tegaderm or opsite on a roll as well so that I have the choice of what to use. Does mean if you do have a leak it gives you extra time before it breeches the extra tape, means no dashing home in an emergency and gives peace of mind.
