Hi, I had step 1 in mid december and was for 10 days after, Im using a 2 piece hollister, mostly because its the one they gave me leaving hospital and havnt had any issues or problems with it. I do remember the big clear ones from hospital, I have to admit watching it did kind of fascinate me, but I suppose large amounts of morphine may of helped that along :)
I am the same with cleaning the end but what i do at home is have a little plastic just in the bathroom that I fill with water and after emptying the bag rinse it out from the jug a few times till its clean then just use some toilet paper to dry. Ive found lieing on my side is fine, at first I had my bag resting on my blanket when im on my side, tucked the blanket in under it so the bag wasnt dragging too much sideways, have had a few leaks around sides which I assume come from it being pulled sideways while I sleep. Also leaks arnt anything to worry about, your body is still adjusting to a lack of colon and this soon after surgery its probably still quite watery, which will improve over time.
Im the same about not knowing what I really have, mine was an emergency op so didnt really have any prep done for it but have found this forum and all you lovely people to be brilliant!!
As for vegtables, im not really too sure but I think we do get all the nutrients and vitamins so long as you chew them properly, first time I had a rhubarb crumble after my op was a disaster, ate it way too quickly and it came out at roughly the same speed :( but its a learning curve and i havnt found anything that my body doesnt cope with, at first I could see vegtables when I emptied but dont notice them anymore, it just takes the body a while to adjust
