Ok so I've heard after surgery hernias are more likely to happen. I'm 9 weeks post surgery, having quite a slow recovery...I overdid it a little at the weekend and thought I'd maybe pulled a muscle except it doesn't feel like that, its just ongoing pain especially when touching the area and laughing/coughing. I think its also swollen a little. I will get it checked out as its so painful but does it sound like an abdominal hernia...brought on as a result of overdoing it a little so soon after surgery??

i had that pain too for a while and thought it could be a hernia. it went on for more than a week i think, then it went away completely. after another week or so it came back, so i made an appt to the surgeon. i had to wait 2 weeks for my appt and just the day before the appt the pain was gone again, so i didn't go. it's been more than 2 mons and the pain hasn't come back since. i don't know what that pain was from, maybe it's the muscles, as you say. but i guess it won't hurt to get it looked at, esp that the difference b/w you and me and that mine wasn't swollen. good luck and feel good.

Is it near your stoma or incision line? That would be the most likely spot to get one. I had a pain like you were describing around 4 months. When I described it over the phone my surgeon thought it might be a hernia, but then when I went in and showed him the spot, he said it was in a location that a hernia would not form. He thought it was just a pulled muscle, which was weird since I had done absolutely nothing remotely athletic at that point and was being super careful. I must have just twisted my body in my sleep or something. My swelling with it was more general too. My home health nurse at the time told me a hernia often feels more like a bulge under the skin.

I still continue to get weird little muscle pains and spasms here and there sometimes even though I am 7 months out.

I would definitely get it checked out, but I wouldn't worry or assume it is a hernia until you know more.

The area is right to the left of the top of my incision. Its so painful, I feel I have been set back a bit as I have been relatively pain free up until this happened. Only thing that makes me doubt it being a hernia is that it is not hard under the skin, its just swollen. I think I will go to the GP as soon as I can. Thank you!

hope it's not a hernia and somethig that will solve easily. let us know how things turn out.

i just thought of something. it could be an inflamation of the muscles. that can be easily solved with antibiotics. when do you see your surgeon?

Oh I didn't know you could get that. I'm supposed to be seeing my surgeon in about a month but not got a date through yet, I might try an get an emergency appt at the doctors tomorrow as it is ridiculously painful!

If you're in a lot of pain, definitely get an emergency appointment .... hope it resolves soon.

Set backs are so frustrating, I'm in one myself.... but healing does go that way sometimes.... sigh.

I got an emergency appointment...turns out I have yet another complication from the surgery. My GP said its where my small intestine has got itself stuck to the internal scar tissue during the healing process. So got to up the Morphine tablets and see what happens...may need to go to hospital for a scan in later weeks but hopefully if need be they will correct it during my step 2 surgery in a few months.

glad you got an emergency appt. so are you going to have to take large doses of morphine till your step 2 surgery?? that's aweful, i'm so sorry. hope you feel good soon.

Glad you found out what it was, sorry it's not getting fixed right away. How long until your next surgery? Hope the pain meds help.

September but thats only if I put on more weight, and I don't seem to have put on any weight in the past 6 weeks so its unlikely it will be that soon! But we shall see, thank you for your concerns smilewinkgrin

How were they able to diagnose that without a scan?
